Off grid sucks...I once bought 3 acres in Campo Ca., in the boonies. Bought a 23 foot travel trailer with no utilities, lasted 2 weeks. Every day bringing home 5 gallons of water and dumping it in the tank. No phone, no TV, a little electric from a solar panel. No one within sight of my trailer, it was hell.

I wouldn't dig it either.  I'm looking at rural blocks.  Phone & net is easy enough, water I could tank, but electric is a must.  Solar is worthless.  I'm not spending $25k on electrics that won't run a damn air conditioner and I'd have to live to be 200 years old to break even on the cost.  A no-batteries mains/solar setup I could see.

Walked 100 acres on Sat.  Really out there tho.  Get-bit-by-a-snake-&-you're-dead out there.  Every truck going the other way (I didn't see 1 car!), the guy gave me a wave.  Some old guy opening the gate to his field waved at me as I went past.  They wave at you going past, that's how lonesome they are out there!  I might chicken out and opt for 5 acres right on the perimeter of a country town.

99% of off grid people burn propane like there's no tomorrow anyway.  All they did was swap power sources because there ain't no fuckin electricity out there, and then they've got the sack to tell you all about their 'progressive living program' or whatever the fuck.

Depends on the size of the system but I'm probably $20k low for rural Aus.  Srs.  Idk what kind of modest draw you're proposing to live with on a $5k budget.

Cost aside, I'm just not sold on the off grid battery bank thing for my wants.  I want climate control and workshop power.  I'm not looking to live in an 'earthship.'
