I would group Muhammad Ali in almost that same category except the problem is that blacks did NOT enjoy the liberties and civil rights as whites at the time and considering what happened to Joe Louis I could not blame him for rejecting military service.  In addition, he didn't hide his reason or make excuses and he paid the consequences for it.
