Can straight guys have a female as a legitimate friend?

I had this debate with a male buddy of mine the other day. I'm of the mindset that it's unlikely a straight male would have any genuine female 'friends', i.e a female version of your male buddies, unless there's an ulterior motive (getting into her pants, has a hot friend/friends etc). He reckons straight guys can have real female friends and spend time together/hang out without there being any intent for more.

I was friends (before leaving London) with a Danish girl. We used to go clubbing together or hang out now and again. If neither of us pulled during clubbing we went back to either mine or hers and fuck for hours. We had a good relationship but was never going to be 'dating'. Don't see the point of this at all.

The only ones I make an effort to be friendly with is due to my own ulterior motives to bed them.  I don't have any motivation to just have a female "friend" personally.

It's an interesting topic for debate.

I'd say I honestly can only think of one female I know that I'd call a real 'friend'. I don't mind hanging out with her (in small doses) and I have no sexual attraction towards her whatsoever. She has some smoking hot friends though that she seems really reluctant to introduce to me...

I can understand why so many women and men can't be 'just friends'. The animal instinct is strong and one needs a lot of practise of mind control or some lucky/great experiences in order to sustain the animal instinct from taking over because 'just friends' means no sexual vibe from either side.

But there are emotionally stable people out there, sexually as well, and those individuals can have friends from the opposite sex because they can separate the animal instincts from interviening humane behavior. But these people are usually assasinated or silenced and you almost never meet one, but when you do, it's a relieving experience.
