Yes, this Americano phenomenon of sleeping in tents in line to a store prior to a sale is one of the most stupid things I've seen. If you're that hard on cash, don't buy the damn product.
Or even easier, instead of tenting for 4 days, work extra hours during these days and you've made enough cash to cover the part of the price you would have saved sitting on your freezing ass in a tent by the store. But I guess living like a bum is much more convenient than working extra hours.

I refuse to go to shopping on "black Friday". It's a stressful, crowded form of chaos I want to avoid.
The stores developed a competitive shopping atmosphere and tied it in with a long standing holiday tradition ( Thanksgiving).
I'm convinced those sleeping on cold sidewalks are not there just to save $$.
They want to be the first to get whatever bargain is offered and then brag about it on Facebook.

I wholeheartedly agree, it's just that I'm shocked every time I see videos of Black Friday. It's frightening that citizens of a civilised world degenerates to mindless brutes just for the sake of getting a discounted playstation.
Like you, I stay away from these "mega sales" days. It's stressful and I always end up feeling stressed out and miserable.

Here's the truth about retail.  The "sale" price is the price they were always going to sell the product at.  The original price is imaginary.  They've done studies on shopping habits and they found people will be more likely to buy a product that is listed as on sale or discounted.

Now shopping on black Friday has become some " I was there" event.
I saw some ads that used a Rocky type of get ready for the shopping fight theme.

It's no different then Clark Grizwald trying to outdo the neighbors with a bigger, brighter display of Christmas lights.

Now that you mention it, I can recall watching a documentary about people obsessed over Black Friday. These people started planning at the start of November and basically saved all necessary purchases except food for the past 6 months.
Thanksgiving was pretty much skipped, they had to be ready 3 am. I just felt bad for the children, they seemed embarrassed.
It was always some neurotic mother leading the rest of the family from store to store on a fixed schedule spanning 12 hours or so.

As you say, they acted like there was some race, having to outdo some invisible competitor.
