I don't think that fact really matters.
The drive for most seems to be to beat out someone else , like some crazy shopping race.
Now that you mention it, I can recall watching a documentary about people obsessed over Black Friday. These people started planning at the start of November and basically saved all necessary purchases except food for the past 6 months.
Thanksgiving was pretty much skipped, they had to be ready 3 am. I just felt bad for the children, they seemed embarrassed.
It was always some neurotic mother leading the rest of the family from store to store on a fixed schedule spanning 12 hours or so.
As you say, they acted like there was some race, having to outdo some invisible competitor.
