Anyone else use non standard equipment in daily training?
« on: December 03, 2014, 12:44:36 PM »
Today was quads, at the end of the session I supersetted sled runs x3 with walking lunges. Repeated that till I was done in. Gotta say it gave an awesome pump and burnt the shit out of my legs.

Anyone else use different equipment for everyday bodypart training?

Used to do one odd object "finisher" at the end of every workout.

Pull anchor chain
Push my strength and conditioning coach's Suburban
Farmer's walks
Do Atlas Stone squats placing a ball on a whiskey barrel till I nearly died.  Granted, it was a smaller ball than one could handle at the beginning of the workout, but that was a bitch.  It further taught me that "round backing" is not nearly as bad as people think, considering you have to "hug" the stone, which places you in a round backed, tail tucked position.

I wonder what Coach's thoughts are on this?

I do a lot of farmers walk.
Ab roller (that weird little wheel contraption).

Does schmoe squats and sauna wrestling count?

Walking lunges (with barbell) is by far my most difficult exercise...and I still squat very (relative) heavy.

I've been meaning to throw farmers walks in but keep forgetting.

There are no chains at my gym but there's a long rope to attach to the sleds, I might try hand over hand next back day.

I raked some leaves and I would switch sides every 30 minutes.  Great shoulder, back and abs workout and have been sore as a result.  Also flex abs with each pull.  It gets really tiring but is extremely effective.

Those yard chores a effective if you have a little, or a lot, muscle in the first place.

Company does all the snow work for my yard in wintertime but I do occasionally do something for the workout.
Like build a castle and pathways for kids. Slides etc.

How does one go about acquiring an old schmoe in the gym? These have peaked my 'interest'.

Yep, Not far off from what we do as a "finisher". We do end each session with some sort of strongman exercise. Be it, farmers walks, keg carries, prowler sprints, tire flips, tire fights, etc. I pretty much keep the stones off limits to the high schoolers and most of the general clientele. Not ready to test my insurance coverage just yet..lol

Last night we finished up with keg carries for 60 yards (water filled) using a bear hug grip paired with battle ropes.

I just got some battle ropes recently. So on cardio days I do:

10 mins ropes (wow, never realized how good these work you)
20 mins - exercise bike
10 mins - inversion table
10 mins - stretch

I try to do this 3 times a week (I lift 4 days a week), but I find myself only doing it twice lately. (Cardio and stretching bores me).
But, gotta be done at my age...

Coach, what are your thoughts on the round backed, tail tucked position at the bottom of a stone/keg squat?

It actually felt very natural to me, as arching with a barbell on your back needs to be learned and therefore must be taught.  Unlike the stone/keg squat.

Urgh stretching. I'm in desperate need of that. Recently I looked up a basic Yoga stretch routine... found it fucking impossible. Didn't try again  :D

I think with stones everything you're taught about keeping a neutral spine goes out the window especially with stones. lol

i do alot of outside walking lunges, tire throws overhead, pushing the sled in parking lot,i tie the rope to a truck tire and try to pull it to me in under a certain amount of time, the weathers getting cold now so i stay inside unless its over 50 degrees, then i go outside. that type of training keeps a person using the muscles in the body that help them function way better in areas like gardening, construction work, alot or sporting activities ect, and helps keep them in great shape cardio wise to boot. give an example,a guy in my gym who regurely benches 450 fairly easily came outside and had a smirk on his face like it was easy what we where doing, make a long story short he tried it and almost had to get taken away in ambulence cause he couldnt catch his breath, luckily he started breathing better and his heart rate came down to a safe number.he walked away looking like an extra for the movie  (night of the living dead)

I put my girl on my shoulders during a concert and I was completely spent. Got a new personal record in the squat the day after.
