Interesting topic on different levels. What makes us "us"? Some would argue that it's the soul that gives us different personalities and makes us different. I've thought that true before, as I've thought there was an afterlife before. But these days I believe it is our brain with it's slightly different wiring that makes us individuals. If you have any doubts about that, you probably don't know anyone who had a serious brain injury that totally turned them from an outgoing fun person to a real asshole almost overnight. Total change of personality due to brain damage. I've also grown comfortable with the likelyhood that when we die, we cease to exist, just like before we were born. It ends there. I'm okay with that.   

Personality is in the brain, no doubt about that. Yet there is an underlying level, consciousness, that is not affected even when suffering from brain injuries.

The brain has a high level of plasticity. So, if you view it as a lens through which you can experience this realm through, and the lens is malleable to the peculiarities of this realm, it makes sense that the brains experiences result in shaping the lens and therefore your experience of this realm.

For example: Bodybuilder Lex Reeves is a fat sack of shit, who lives with his mum, was bullied by physically superior specimens all his life and his lens has been warped into spending his time trying to seek revenge through the art of trolling bodybuilding sites. However, his conscience, when it leaves this realm, will revert to a body-less state where it will no longer be shackled by the pea-brained thinking that he currently displays.
