The Transition from standing to the Ground is important. Even if a throw fails Neil Adams shows the follow up. Outstanding how he moves knowing exactly where to position himself. One of the Best Judo Champions in the World. I can remember years ago as a kid guys saying Judo is not effective ..how times have changed thanks to the popularity of BJJ and Sambo. Exciting times are ahead !

A nice 8 part series which you can klick on to. The Grip is important and use of the Gi. Remember being shown a few "dirty" tricks for competition such as pulling the Gi in a manner that produced pain in the under arm area. This then gave you the chance to follow up as the opponent lost concentration.. all good stuff.

Neil Adams was an all round Athlete. He did use weight lifting early on in his career.

Of course no system can claim to be the "Best". Judo and BJJ are imperative for an "All round system".

one of the best technical fighters ever. Some styles of escrima have adopted Judo in their Repertoire.
This is the way to go mix it up

Judo Kata

Kime no Kata

Goshin Jutsu no Kata

Judo has still preserved Self Defence in itīs Kata, Does BJJ iīm not sure.
They do practice self defence but kata?

Interesting thread, Donny.

A separate general Martial Arts section is needed or this one should be renamed since no one here posts about MMA/UFC anymore.

BJJ does not have kata.

Wrestling has no kata.

Boxing has no kata.

Original JKD (Carruthers) has no kata.

I don't consider the practice of a few move sequences (like shadow boxing) to be kata.

I do like the Judo kata but this is tought later. It is well balanced & not too much like say Shotokan karate.
a friend of mine was a fanatical Shotokan fan & loved itīs many Kataīs
I did not like Shotokan

Kata is taught often with no explanation of the applications.

I don't think most instructors even know the applications.

exactly this.. & the more kata you must learn the worse it gets in my opinion. I remember watching Shotokan belt "Graduation tests" & honestly it was embarassing.

People have in many organisations invented kata for their own financial gains, what was once tought in a closed circle in a back yard in the philippines is now money making

The EWTO in Germany has milked people for years & cleverly had a "school system" of grades not unlike a belt system we see in other martial arts.

Itīs all money making & the secret is to find someone who really is the real deal

How you find these people is you look deeper & speak to people, do your own research.
I met one (and his family) when i was working in a Gym & also got to know other people who were training abroad & very serious.

The local Karate studio has mainly standard ..people in a "standard" frame of mind

This old Kito Ryu Jujutsu Kata is preserved in Judo.
