It would be a step in the right direction in terms of slightly attracting the general public, but the ship has already sailed as far as bringing bodybuilding back.

90% of the current pros are boring compared to the pros of the 70's - 90's.

The G4P aspect is clearly in your face now with just a few Google clicks.

The drug issue is a whole lot less cloudy when it comes to the hobby than it was even 20 years ago.

etc....

etc....

Bodybuilding will always be a cult hobby no matter what is done.

There will be much gnashing of teeth here on GB, but the "future of bodybuilding" is the physique class. Most men aspire to that look and most women aspire to have their man look like that. Today's pro-level bodybuilders are abominations: bloated bellies, bright red moonfaces below bald heads. All less than 5'6". Ridiculous.

Bodybuilding will become more and more niche until it is nothing but a rented out church-hall in TriBeCa where the oilbags will strut for the G4P crowd and all the advertisement will be via craigslist.

At first I thought it may have to do with the lifestyles, and not the physiques. For example, people not liking bodybuilding becasue of the g4p, the crazy drug use, etc. But how many people out there really know about the destruction of the bodybuilding lifestyle? Probably not many. They just see huge, massive bodies and think, "gross." Even if their interest peaked in bodybuilding, once they find out about the lifestyle, they will probably be turned away.

To answer your question, yes to a point. But, extremely muscular physiques will never be mainstream because most people dont care for them.  People like the amount of muscle on the guy who played Thor for example.  Anymore than that enters the "gross" zone for most.  This sucks but is just reality.  The general public also doesn't realize it takes years and years to build a great physique be it natural or not.
