You tip me well and I will go above and beyond to make sure I can do everything I can for you the have the best experience possible while I am waiting on you. Where I'm from servers get paid $3.13 an hour and after taxes our paychecks are a few bucks a week. We make our money on tips. Take care of your server and your server will take care of you. We will always remember and bad mouth bad tippers and the entire staff will know it, trust me.

Then do something else for a living.  What are you, born to carry plates of food?

Actually in about 4 weeks I start training at a fine dining restaurant that is just opening up where the casino hosts will be bringing in all of the high rollers to go eat. Average of $98 charge per person not including drinks I am pretty optimistic with where things are headed and truth be told I do enjoy what I do. Like the saying goes if you don't have the money to tip accordingly then maybe you should't be going out. Stay home and make your own food and drinks. Yes I realize that saying is completely biased but come on  ;D

Well now, come on.  If we're talking about the kitchen staff this is a fair point but we're talking wait staff here.  Waiters don't make the food.  You should be telling me to stay at home and carry my own food and drinks to the table.  That's what waiters do.  They carry stuff.

Here's the thing, I left $6 bucks but I've been questioning whether I should have discounted the tip some bit because I was obviously being ripped of for the body builders breakfast.  Isn't the waiter also to some extent morally culpable simply by working for such an establishment?

Sure there are some who will say they were "just following orders" but we all know where that leads.

A waiter only makes about 2.15 an hour.  Always tip properly or don't eat out at all.  Don't take it out on someone who has nothing to do with pricing... ::)

Of course I tip when dining in primitive nations that haven't legislated a fair minimum rate of pay.  Everyone should be able to afford a basic standard of living, even if their only real responsibility is not to spill things on people.

Any of you guys ever wait tables?  I paid my way through university serving tables.

Anyone ever find certain races tipped very differently?

Then tip is fine but breakfast at restaurants are much too overpriced for what you get. Especially if you need lots of egg whites. Such a rip off...

Bartending was my thing but I see where you're going.

Yes, blacks don't tip.

To be fair, Europeans suck at tipping, too. That includes Brits.

I'm talking averages. On average blacks and Europeans don't tip as well as white Americans.

This opinion doesn't come from a racist standpoint, but as a result of several years experience working in clubs and restaurants.

we don't have a tipping culture in the uk. fuckers should be grateful that we are buying food in the establishment that pays their wages.

Was talking like 4 extra whites. They charge like $1 per egg white. Fuck that, terrible f'in rip off.
$25 for one breakfast is stupid. I spend $140ish week on food and stupid bills like that for one quickly digested meal is not good. Would bet a huge pizza instead and eat for 3 meals.

My point is the 12 missed grams of protein, or the extra fat from just getting an egg isn't going to make any difference whatsoever.  "Needing" an extra four egg whites is outside the norm, and that will always be costly.   They can't utilize the lost yolk, so you have to pay for it.

$25 for breakfast is expensive, but it should be the exception, not the norm.  You  can't try to translate restaurant meals into regular food pricing.  The math will never work.

Exactly, then round up. Bar: A buck per, unless it's a double or something fancy. Simple.

Take-out is where we've gotten sticky before. Seems crazy to me, but I've done it since reading some reasonable responses here. But it begs the question: Why not tip fastfood then, walk-in or drive-through? They cook, sort, and package just like take-out, and they're by far the lowest earners.

Makes no sense.
Becuase no one is waiting on you.

I absolutely despise the societal standard that tipping is necessary. If you don't tip, its like your shunned from society.  :-\ :-\
