So what happened to boxing?
« on: January 01, 2015, 10:46:04 AM »
Why does no one care anymore. I mean yeh da cage is where its at but I don't see why that alone killed boxing. Yeh they re both combat sports but baseball, basketball football they re all ball games and one doesn't really affect another.
Boxing sure is done, I mean I just heard the once super prestigious top prize in sport the WBC heavyweight title is on th eline in 2 weeks. WTF. Never knew.
I know about Jones - Cormier tho.

Nah, most of the big fights get made... There's too many belts, but everyone that follows the sport knows who's the boss of each division

Ppv doesn't help, but id still say its as strong as ever, all the big shows in UK are sold out straight away

I personally think MMA has almost ran it's course. Either I'm not seeing or not noticing but I don't see the fan turnout like it used to be. I'd rather watch boxing.

Agree. The sport has become boring.

Cue the annual "What about boxing?" thread.

A big boxing match is still a much bigger draw than the best MMA fight. The best MMA fights draw like a medium quality boxing match. Much bigger in the foreign markets too, and now the Chinese are slowly being integrated into the mix.

Also from a fighter's perspective, the money in a middle to high level fight is still better boxing vs MMA. And now with the UFC making that money grab over individual sponserships....? Yikes.

MMA has run it's course.  Attendance is way down and the novelty has worn off.

Within the next 20 years I predict we will see "Running man" types of sports and game shows.

I think MMA is like karate of the 80's-90's. It stems from Kung fu movies, which lead to a Karate Dojo on every corner. It has died off since our generation has grown up.  MMA is the new fad, where every douche thinks he's a bad ass because he's rolled around a few times. Boxing is here for the long haul.

MMA ain't going nowhere. Depends which "man on the street" you run into, I guess. All I'm hearing from everyone right now is Jones vs. Cormier.

Where are the Alis, Leonards, Hearns', Haglers, Tysons, DeLaHoyas, etc. these days? We got the Russian, Mayweather, and a washed-up Flip, who else? Who else that this man on the street knows about?

Boxing has had declines before. The heavyweight division was regarded as "dead" until this Cassius Clay fellow came along...    Personally MMA just didn't work for me.

Agreed. I used to get pumped up for all the UFC ppv. All my buddies would get together. That was ages ago, have no clue who's who in the sport now. The reality show is stale now, like any longer running reality show gets. That show was huge for bringing fans to MMA. I don't know that it's dying but it def peaked a couple years back and will never be at professional boxing's level.

I'm a fan, Wes. Just don't see many headliners anymore. Plus, the whole boxing vs. MMA zero-sum BS just gets pretty silly afterwhile. If the NBA gets too popular will the NFL fail? Silliness.

In America, at least, here's your barometer: Count the boxing gyms in any given city vs. the MMA/BJJ facilities. And it's VERY different than the Karate/Kung fu trend on the heels of Bruce Lee fame, because MMA retired that nonsense as a form of worthwhile self-defense, which is something that will always interest people. Always has. And if you're practicing it, odds are you're gonna follow the pros, too.

Both sports will be fine.

That's how I've felt about boxing for a while now. But I go through those stretches with MMA, too, but when new superstars appear (and they always do), it gets fun again.

Honestly, don't even know who the boxing stars are anymore, but I'd love to get excited about someone again. Speaking of which, just saw a documentary on Johnny Tapia. My God, what a tough-ass, talented sumbitch. Just too many f'n demons. End obviously bummed me out, though, as one might expect. Had no idea.

I hear what you`re saying,but I think it`s in a resurgance now.

Lots of good guys out there:

Danny Garcia
Lucas Matthyse (sp)
Omar Figueroa
Tim Bradley
Provatnochov (spelling again ? )
Kell Brook
Gennady Golovkin
Mike Alvarado
Nonito Donaire
Kahn
Marcos Maidana
Mikey Garcia

And a ton of other guys.

Not a lot of good heavyweights though.

Nothing beats the days of Hagler,Hearns,Leonard,Duran, etc. etc.
