I knew  early on that bodybuilding was filled with extreme steroid use and attracted oddballs / schmoes with various sex fetishes .
It was always my misguided hope that serious bodybuilding would be a wholesome, healthy, legitimate "sport".

The last straw for me , was seeing DLB's worn Olympia posing suit for bidding sale on EBAY.
WTF? !

I'm no prude or demand every bodybuilder be as pure as the driven snow, but c'mon.
I dabbled in a little vit S and have had my share of sexual adventures.
BUT being a synthol filled , walking pharmacy is crazy.

Why does such extreme freaky crap, always end up in/around hardcore BB?

The cost of drugs and clean food is very expensive.  Add in the cost of travel, gyms etc... and the payouts at contests sucks asshole.  Guys spend anywhere from $30-50K a year to win a $10,000 first place check.  They need to make money somewhere.

That makes sense.

BUT, what prevents them from saying woah, I'm NOT doing all that just for a trophy?

I'm no genius, and a meathead that loves bodybuilding.
BUT, I said FUK NO, when it came to paying much $$ for a lot of drugs.
I wanted to compete and win, but I wasn't willing to sell out on everything to do it.

The drugs are the things that cost the most.  You can write off the travel and gym expenses at the end of the year.

Clean food is not expensive at all, especially when you buy in bulk and make everything yourself.  Eating out is what's expensive.  People are so fucking lazy.

LOL, I have better odds of becoming 7 ft tall and growing a 14" dong.

I gave up thinking hardcore bodybuilding would be "wholesome" many years ago.
The extreme drug use and seedy sex antics aren't part of my personal bodybuilding lifestyle.
BUT, most within bodybuilding are not like me, for whatever reason.

It's a constant battle , of just wanting to enjoy bodybuilding on my terms, and dealing with the reality of the majority in it.

i dont think its a trophy. its more the obsession with training, competing, and winning. peoe that compete on elite levels are extremely obsessed with the culture. they live it.

oh and why are we putting ant strength sport or bodybuilding in the same sentence as health? these are sports based on extremes. healthy is crossfit, swimming, zumba lol. 100 lbs overweight (fat or muscle), peptides that arent tested, 6 or 7k cal a day, etc. none of these spell health.
and knowing that, i want to compete again this summer. after not for years.. i guess that goes back to that obession thing

Dieting sucks..the training and changing your body almost daily is what makes competing fun..its the challenge. I don't actually like the shows. Look around when u go to one..the women have egos the size of their huge fake breasts.

Back in the 70's very few had a Weider contract and it was chump change. A few had jobs unlike Grant, Zane, Katz and a few others. Supplement contracts were unheard of.  I always wondered what these guys did to make money back then. They all had apartments and money for food/drugs. How they get the money to hang out and train?  Then the dirty rumors started to come forward. When I was younger I didn't want to believe it but I was naive.

I bodybuild. I trained in the gyms when weight lifting gyms were a rare thing. I do have to admit it does attract strange individuals. How can it not? It's a breeding ground for misfits and insecure men who will risk health to be thought of as a man through cosmetic temporary drug muscles. It's a sport based on men posing in a thong to music all oiled up for cheering men.  Go on any  internet board for running, cross fit, biking or any other athletic activity. You find it quite a contrast to the thunder dome of getbig.

if that's what you think that says a lot about you still being a fan

the other sports would have more just based on overall number of fans

in 2015 shouldn't bodybuilding be seen as "progressive" if it's open to homos?  isn't that a good thing today?

who the hell is the mayor?

I like the training part and when I was younger and naive I loved the competition part and bought the magazines. I was lucky too cause I'm from Southern California and trained at golds Venice for a bit. But through friends and getting older I realized all the shit that goes on, drug use, liars, schmoes, homos, I lost interest. I don't follow bbing like I used too but do look at the results of the Olympia, that's it  ;D

It's just a lot of shady people and with Instagram and social media gaining lots of exposure through the yrs it brought out even more douches and every female thinks she's the shit

I'm sure there are homos in other sports no question but I'm willing to bet bbing appeals more cause just look at the lifestyle, posing in thongs , oiled up, and the attention is on the body and body only, not to mention all the white towel private posings, porn that some of the competitors do, afterall, they do have to venture in other professions to make an income

U can't honestly say that happens in baseball or basketball. Sure drug use, parties, and most likely there's homos but they aren't exactly "underpaid" and using thier physiques as a means to their income

What's wrong with drugs and sex fetishes?   Here we have two major religions - one of whom specializes in buggering little boys, the other in raping little girls, and a country that spends each year on alcohol, tobacco and firearms than on education, and obscure stuff that  happens in a minor sport is of concern? Why?

The bodybuilding lifestyle is a subculture and subcultures often breed whackos.  BB teaches you to reject a lot of things normal society tells you to do.  You don't follow a normal 7 day week or a 3 meal a day schedule, you could be eating 5 meals a day and splitting working out 3 on 1 off.  It exalts extremes beyond the normal also whether it is in the physique, the diet, the work ethic whatever.  You learn not to accept the normal shit you are spoon fed and indeed the culture is to reject the normal.  Add to this the insular quality of the subculture and you can get a lot of odd types.

Many body builders do not want to spend time working, much like actors they'd rather be perfecting their craft.  This often leads to people wanting to earn enough to get by in ways other than jobs, through hustling, illegal activity whatever.

It is also a good place for oddballs to hide.

I just don't understand why bodybuilding can't be a legit, wholesome sport WITHOUT freakish physiques or sex fetish perverts.

Because it involves oil, thongs, and prancing around on a stage.   Mystery solved.

Maybe less prancing would help? ;D
