Which is top of the pile?

a) Taxi Driver

b) Raging Bull

c) Goodfellas

Feel free to throw in any other selections from his range (Mean Streets, The King of Comedy, Cape Fear, The Age of Innocence, Casino, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, etc.).

1. Raging Bull

2. Taxi Driver

3. Casino

4. Mean Streets

5. The Color of Money

6. Goodfellas

7. Cape Fear

8. The King of Comedy

Casino is better than Goodfellas.

Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, but they're all amazing. As are many others. The Departed?

I like it quite a bit. It's not nearly as polished as his later stuff, but that's sort of its appeal. It's like the best student film ever made. Great dialogue, and DeNiro is fantastic.

Mean Streets is less polished and more heart felt film than the other two mob films, and that's why I enjoy it the most. It's also is less complementary to the whole mobster lifestyle, than the others. I tend to like my crime films more on dealing with the fringe lower levels of crime, urban decay, etc....

I also enjoy Keitel in it, when Keitel is on, he is every bit the equal of Deniro, and Pacino. The whole interplay he has with himself in Mean Streets is wonderful. The flawed man dealing with the realities of life in that neighbourhood and circle of friends, etc....

It gets extra points for being a Ny crime film based in the 1970's, that was actually shot in the 1970's. It's a small thing, but it makes it more enjoyable. You don't find yourself looking for flaws in scenery, etc....

Finally the poster art is top notch -

Does one have to be an arty film critic to enjoy Reservoir Dogs as well?

great post. but don't ever again feel the need to explain yourself to that mental slug army of one.

it's his most personal film. very autobiographical. it was filmed in scorsese's old neighbourhood (as no doubt you already know). some of the buildings and locations used were his old stomping grounds growing up. its a snapshot of an era and people that are now long gone. italian is even spoken as a first language in some scenes for crying out loud. its very 70s indeed, grounded in realism like watching a documentary almost. and yes, keitel was excellent. plus the lead actress with her sweet 70s bush and nipples you can hang your coat on..

oh, and a great soundtrack. in MEAN STREETS you can see the beginnings of the greatness of waht was to come.

I never had even heard anything about the movie "Mean Streets" when I received it in a 4 pack DVD set for a gift a few years back but I noticed it was a Scorcese film so I was super excited to watch it.

I even remember specifically mentioning the same very things in here "New York" "1970's" to my girlfriend, but eventually some sort of plot has to emerge and for me it never did. I was bored to tears and ended up waking up in the middle of the film, turning it off and then going right back to sleep with no regrets.

Sorry but a "gritty look" at Scorcese's old neighborhood and it being "his first project" or whatever only gets you so far.

Both are great but I think DeNiro's bigger role puts Casino in front.

Love the hammer scene. 'You can either have the money and the hammer, or you can walk out of here.' Good stuff.
