best truck for 15k-20k range?
« on: January 11, 2015, 05:12:35 PM »
Not looking to go more than 20k, 10-15k would be ideal. I just want something respectable, that looks good enough to where I actually have some motivation  to get it washed and cleaned out on a regular basis. Im tired of driving a piece of shit.

If you wanted a truck because you needed a truck for work, I'd look for a gen 3 cummins.

If you're getting a truck even though you don't tow, haul, or work with it then I'd say get a car and invest the money you save

For $20k a year, you can pay a professional bodybuilder to give you piggy back rides everywhere you want to go.

Then again, with a pro bodybuilding on payroll, why would you ever want to leave the house?

Starting price on a new Tacoma is roughly $20,765.  If you are on a budget then a slightly used one is the way to go.

tacomas are hands down the best, if you can find one in good condition for your range.

others would be the nissan range or the 5.7 ford and chevy full sizes.  again, condition is paramount.  if you're unsure ask if you can have a mechanic check it out before you buy.  dealers are better than personal sales nowadays.  warranties are usually good and a lot of legislation has changed the horror stories of yesteryear.

do NOT buy a ford 5.4 triton motor made before 2004.  don't fucking do it.  they suffer from spark plug ejection not covered by recalls.  expensive as shit to fix (properly).

I just did the same thing this summer. Looked and researched for months on a truck at the 15-20k range.

I concluded Toyotas to be the best, but out of my price range or too many miles.

Ford and Chevy's seem to be to close to call. Didn't bother looking at Nissan or Dodge, because I know too many people that have had problems with them.

I went with a 2010 fx4 5.4. $17,000 with 60k miles. Good deal as it had no rust which is rare for upstate NY. Also bought a full 100k warranty. So far the trucks been awesome.

Terrible reasoning to spend that much money (unless you are loaded and get the impression you are not).

Find a clean used F-150 if you want a full size truck. The 3-valve 5.4L from '05 to '10 ish has a funky spark plug design that needs to be changed by dealer at 100k...but other than that those trucks are a good value. The 4.6L is a very solid motor although a good bit less power. That 4.2L V6 is really a workhorse as well if you aren't towing. I've had all the Ford truck motors at some point - F-150s/250s/Excursion. I wouldn't buy an F-250/350 with the 5.4L at all, not enough motor for that platform and used ones might be overworked. The V10 is fine though if you can handle 10-12mpg.

Disagree with Bay on a used Tacoma. Where I'm at the used ones are 80% of what a new one is with 100k on the clock. Reliable truck but the 20k model is shite for options...if you want extra cab and 4wd you are north of 30k.

If you want something that will crank up and go everyday for all eternity get a Tacoma or a Ford Ranger. I imagine Nissans would be great too.

Dodge sucks. Chevy sucks.

Full sizes are a waste of money (unless you truly need one) but I understand most of generation nothingness needs to one-up all the other nobodies in the rat race so they buy bigass expensive impractical shit.

What else would you recommend a 22 year old guy spend his money on?
