GLOBAL celebrity Arnold Schwarzenegger will be assured of the best security when he visits Melbourne for a major sports event in March.
Heading his security detail will be gym owner and fitness fanatic Tony Doherty, who has partnered with the Terminator to stage the Arnold Classic Australia — a three-day festa including bodybuilding, martial arts and bikini competitions.
Mr Doherty, who was famously talking to Toby Mitchell when the Bandidos sergeant-at-arms was shot outside Doherty’s Brunswick gym in 2011, is no stranger to ensuring Schwarzenegger’s personal safety.
“I work at other Arnold Classics with him, I MC his events and I work in the security bubble where we take him through expos with 50,000 fans trying to meet him,” he said.
Mr Doherty said he was overwhelmed that the champion bodybuilder who became Californian governor via a successful acting career would be in Melbourne as his guest.
“Arnold is probably the most incredible person in our lifetime, he’s succeeded in three different careers, he’s beaten the odds and taken on the world and inspired millions of people,” he said.
Mr Doherty didn’t think that incidents like the notorious Mitchell shooting outside his gym would worry Schwarzenegger.
“Gyms attract all kinds of people and being open 24 hours a day we can’t sort of police who comes in, it’s like having a top end restaurant,” he said.
“ I’ve not been part of any investigations ... I’m a gym owner and a promoter and a family man and Arnold has obviously done his homework on me as a partner and it certainly won’t have any impact on the Arnold Classic.”
Tickets for the event to be held on March 13, 14 and 15 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre can be booked at
