A CONVERSATION WITH A WOMAN ABOUT FACEBOOK DEFRIENDING
« on: February 01, 2015, 09:29:08 AM »
When I was at my old job, about 2 years ago, some people at work friend requested me on FB. So, I obliged. After a while, I just started to delete people from my friends list. This included defriending people from my FB who I previously worked with (I was trying to cut back on the time I spend on FB). So, I defriended a woman from my old job. There was never nothing between us. I'd never date a current or former colleague anyway. Anyway, she found out I defriended her and wrote me. The following conversation:

Her: Why did you defriend me?
Her: I see you're reading my facebook messages and not responding.
Her: Why did you defriend me?
Me: Sorry, I am just getting a chance to respond now. Don't take it personally, but I am trying to cut down how much time I spend on FB, and have deleted a bunch of people. My plan was to leave on a few close relatives and that's it.
Her: But the point of facebook is to stay connected to all sorts of people, not just those who are your close friend.
Me: Hmmm, yeah, I guess you can say that is true. But I really prefer to do it like this.
Her: How will you stay in touch with people over time?
Me: There are many ways. It does not always have to be facebook.
Her: What other ways are there?
Me: You can always text or email me.
Her: I only text and email close friends or family.
Me: So, why do you care if I defriended you from facebook, if I am not a close friend or family? It doesn't seem worth it to get mad over.
Her: Because I like reading people's updates to see how they are doing and chatting through FB.
Me: Okay, but I am sorry that you feel that way.
Me: Anyway, how did you find out I defriended you?
Her: I have an app.
Me: And what does that app do?
Her: It tells me when someone has defriended me.
Me: Wow, that's very.............strange .
Her: No, not really. I like to know who my FB friends are.
Me: Okay, well, I guess I could add you back.
Her: Thank you.

So, about 2-3 months pass by. I talk to her here and there. Nothing special. Thinking back, I was pissed for adding her back. So, I decided to tell her that I was going to deactivate and/or delete my facebook (even though I wasn't). However, I just defriended her. Guess what happened?  :-\

Her: I saw that you defriended me. Why did you defriend me again?
Me: I should have never added you back in the first place.
Her: I don't understand what is the big deal.
Me: There is no big deal. As I told you, I was just removing all sorts of people I rarely talk to, and just keeping family on.
Her: You said you were going to delete your whole FB, but you just removed me.
ME: Yes, I did. I am not too sure what you want to hear.
Her: Nothing, I just think you should leave me on.
Me: Um, okay.

I never added her back.

Not to mention that besides FB, we never ever contacted each other any other way. She was acting like she was my best friend and I deleted her.  :-\ :-\

The lordy knows I hate facebook "friends". They're all chatty and social while behind a screen, but meet them in person and they are socially inept and awkward. This world surely needs to wake up.   :-\

I have contemplated that. A few of my very close friends recently just had babies, so they post pics up and stuff. Its nice to see that stuff. Maybe create a FB page with just a very limited amount of people.

I never added her back.

Your loss.

Now you'll never know what she had for dinner, if she had a good time in the snow with her kids, and what she may find offensive.....not to mention the slew of links to wacky videos you'll miss.

I don't add many people, mostly just close friends, but I do have a few friends of friends that I added because they asked. I usually don't defriend them, but I unfollow, and add them to the acquaintance tab, and add my close friends to the close friends tab. It's cut down on the horseshit on my timeline, but it allows me to check in, if I'm curious.

Well, we work in the same exact field and know mutual people. Plus, I will most likely see her at some point in the future (conferences, seminars, etc.). So, I didn't want to be too harsh, ya know.

I just don't know why she got so upset.  :-\ :-\

I feel you, but why should we beat around the bush to appease people. If we want to defriend them, we should!! We should not worry about people getting upset.

We need to unite under a common cause of defriending!! Will you stand with me?!?!  :D :D

Even if FB ended, something else would replace it. You had livejournal, myspace, now FB. Some other social media site would replace it if FB ever took a nose dive.

Dude, it's your FB page, why let some passive-aggressive housewife you will never prone bone tell you what to do?

Just because she asked a question does not obligate you to responding!

Aw, I still feel bad. An unfriending is a the 21st century affirmation that they suck, are a bore, etc.... to some people, And then if you know the same people, what a hassle. It is funny that she sent that long message though.

Do a call out like this and she won't recover ;D
