I'm not a guitar player. ( i stab at it occasionally), but in my opinion...I don't think any one of these guys is better "technically" than the other.  I laugh when people say X can't play as fast as Y.

i would think dudes at this level can play any piece of music ever written on a guitar, it's what they choose to play

Not necessarily. Most rock guitarists get lost outside of rock music. They usually have trouble playing in odd time signatures and using scales outside of their comfort zone.

That said - a guitarist shouldnt really be measured on his ability but more on the music they create.

If you want to pick technically the best guitarists in the world you are looking at the likes of Guthrie Govan.

Evh is the man. All the players mentioned besides him wish they were evh. Fast isn't the word you all are looking for it's legato.

not to get into a pissing match, but I have a very hard time believing Steve Vai or Joe Satriani would be confused a tricky time signature

i've heard them all, more to being a great guiitarist besides technique.

and PS before everyone figured out how to play like him, EVH was THE technique monster. just happened to be a great rock songwriter too. he changed the way rock sounds.

Wow! I have to agree with Groink 100%. Eddie did it all. He is by far the most innovative player, ever.
When EVH plays you know its him and his solo on Michale Jacksons "Beat it" is suposed to be the best solo of all times.
It took him 12 minutes to do it. 2 takes and it was done..

Even Ritchi Blackmore said EVH is the only player with style and talent. Ritchi never gives out complements.
EVH did change the sound of guitar playing and looked cool doing it. Just a great musician all around with a background of classical piano. (his dad was a pretty famous Studio Jazz player)

there are many great players out there but no one is the caliber of Eddie. Solo at 2:28

EVH just isn't a fantastic guitarist.  He's a far superior song writer.  That is what made him the best.

FWIW, I love all of those guys mentioned, but prefer Guthrie.  Loads of talent, but with soul.  He's a musician first; shredder second.  There is a difference.

EVH isn't that great of a guitar player.

John Sykes and Gary Moore are far better, Adrian Vandenberg, Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, John Petrucci, Andy Wood, Chris Broderick, Paul Gilbert... All these guys are miles ahead Eddie.
Hahahahaha!

No clue who/which was the best, but always loved George Lynch's "Tooth and Nail" solo. Also, wasn't "Hot for Teacher" considered somewhat of a landmark as well, with the eight-finger dealio and whatnot?

No idea, really.

No pissing match at all - just talking  :)
Vai has a doctorate in music so no probably not.  I think if you put something complicated by Allan Holdworth in front of Vai or Satch (Two of my favourites) they would have a lot of trouble with it.
That said - a lot more people can sit and listen to Satch then Holdsworth (myself included)

Yeah both good players. My taste lies more in the Fusion territory - Holdsworth, Landau, Al Dimeola etc

Monster players!

Of the new guys Tosin Abasi is a seriously talented negroid.

Hes so corny onstage its cringeworthy.  Has a fan, ala Michael Jackson..to make his hair blow.

But....he's also happily married with two children,  Founded the Make a Noise Foundation, and travels the world giving away instruments to underprivileged children. Is a Beekeeper , and is apparently a big deal in those circles.  Vegan.....definitely an original dude

The amusing thing being you can't even afford a Plasma television. You have a 14 inch chrome dildo I mean Zenith.

I replace all 6 of  my 72 inch 3d LED TVs if they get dust on them.

Complete domination
