Diet and stress.  Drink lots of water and peppermint tea , sleep on your left side.  Strange as it sounds but sleeping on your right makes it worst.

can you double up the dose of omniprazole? I went and got a prescription and it's the same just twice as strong dose, also take it in the morning half an hour before you eat anything

You basically have to cycle through the proton pump inhibitor medications until you find the one that works for you. Omeprazole did not work for me either but lansoprazole did

I can't remember what I was on before omniprazole but it started to give me gyno so watch out for that

I'm sure the alcohol doesn't help. I had it bad when I was drinking. Nothing at all now.

What does minimize toxins even mean?

try some bitters, they will stimulate gastrin, enzymatic action, bile secretion. Lower the dose of the PPI over a period of time. Add some demulcents to your diet like psyllium, meditate (stress), don't have asthma, use gaviscon as you are weaning or after each meal. Must be after meal, otherwise the raft (gel if forms) won't settle

Ginger tea during day.

Minimize toxins means to decrease the amount of toxins that you put inside or on your body.

What does "don't have asthma" mean for the practical purposes of this conversation lol?

Illuminati and El Diablo Blanco made some really good suggestions. I had reflux for about 6 months last years. Took a lot of experimentation to get rid of it.

Peppermint tea and Ginger tea both really help, they work via different mechanisms so its worth alternating them throughout the day.

Camomile is an anfi-inflmmatory which soothes the intestines.

Fresh ginger is even better, jbuy a root from the supermarket and slice a few pieces into camomile tea. Drink all liquids away from a meal.

You want to get off PPI as quick as you can, they dont really help, just mask the problem.

That main problem with reflux is that your stomach acid is actually too weak. Because its so weak, it cannot break down the food you are eating effectively, when you have weak stomach acid and lots of liquid floating around, this is when it can flow back up your oesophagus and cause the burning sensation.

If you eat a meal drink very little liquid with it, if possible none at all. This will ensure your stomach acid is as strong as possible, food will be digested effectively and the potential for flow back minimal. Another good idea which one of the other posters suggested was drinking some Bitters before a meal which will boost your stomach acid production.

The other problem is with the stomach valve not closing, partly this is due to a lack of acidity which plays a part in the valve closing and preventing flow back of acid but also a magnesium deficiency. Mangesium oxide will help take 500mg every day.

Slippery elm is another supplement of use to try which helps form a soft mucilage and can help heal and protect the lining of the stomach and oesophagus. The powder can be mixed with milk, something the native indians used as medicine. Works pretty well.

Things like Gaviscon, Pepto Bismol are awful stuff, they treat the symptom and not the cause, they are alkaline and reduce your stomach acidity further so that you dont get the burning sensation when the acid hits your oesophagus. They do nothing to treat the cause of heartburn or GERD, and in fact extend and make it worse.

I battled this on and off and have done so for many years....in the end its my lifestyle choices that help not the meds.

when I get it, I stay away from meats and caffeinated drinks and alcohol.

Starchy foods seem to help, porridge for breakfast and potatoes/ pastas later, I'd only eat white fish and eggs for proteins...even milk gives me a hard time.

Usually by eating like the above I'm back to normal within 24hrs.

symptom of gluten intolerance

I would go with this. Cut back dramatically on grains and replace them with green leafys.

This was the single best change I've made to my diet in my life. No more "racing to the can" or acid stomach. In addition, I used to get colds 2 or 3 times a year. Now, it's maybe once every two years.

To put a cherry on top, this change will probably knock off at least 500 calories a day, making it easier to stay lean.
