Problem is that when people complain, it goes straight to my email, so my phone kept going off with notifications and people were asking about the purpose of these freaking threads.

Sometimes the best course of action is to take no action. The freaking threads would have eventually played themselves out.

It is a little surprising that some people took it upon themselves to complain about them. Just don't open them if you aren't interested....it is really just that simple.  ::)
