Lets talk about addictions
« on: February 23, 2015, 01:52:10 PM »
They're a worldwide epidemic. They encompass all races, all classes and all ages. What drives us to be addicted to things?  Be it porn, fornication, drinking, gambling, drugs, money, etc. Does it really come down to that euphoric feeling you get that you can't get enough of? I understand it's a sensitive subject to talk about I think that means we should talk about it more so. Yes?  Some people will say it's an evil spirit in the person, some people will say the people are weak. Are we all slaves to that feeling in this realm?

If you enjoy something why is it an addiction?

Fear center of the limbic brain in some needs constant stimulation.  Morons for the most part.

Addiction - there is a psychological/physical component; the person is unable to control the aspects of the addiction without help because of the mental or physical conditions involved.
Habit - it is done by choice. The person with the habit can choose to stop, and will subsequently stop successfully if they want to. The psychological/physical component is not an issue as it is with an addiction.

It's the deathwish impulse out of control.  The deathwish is an under studied phenomenon in psychiatry.

If you think about it, in the beginning it was the rabid fornicators that helped insure the survival of the species.

Okay, I thought it was something else I'd never heard of before, like unmarried men addicted to having sex exclusively with unmarried women, or something like that...fornicators anonymous.

Addiction is a purely biochemical process which occurs at the cellular level. It really has very little to do with the cognitive aspect of our brains (although this part of our brain is so powerful that it can override the addictive compulsion in most instances of recovery).
It is the result of certain chemical compounds, be they from external drug sources or biochemical products of certain behaviours e.g. sex, exercise, palatability of certain food etc. influencing gene expression in certain neural tissues of the brain. This altered gene expression causes neural and behavioural alterations in brain biochemistry.

How susceptible you are to altered gene expression is largely dependent on your genetics. This is why some people can drink all of their lives and never become truly dependent where as others struggle with alcohol addiction/reliance from an early age.

Get as much pleasure as you can, it's the purpose of life. Find what you love and let it kill you.
