An Iranian man convicted of blinding another man by throwing acid in his face has been punished by having one of his own eyes gouged out by medics, according to state media, an act which has prompted outrage from international human rights groups, and drawn comparisons between the Iranian authorities and Islamic State.

The punishment, carried out at Rajai-Shahr prison in the city of Karaj earlier this week, is thought to be the first of its kind in Iran.

The man, who reportedly fell unconscious after the punishment, was found guilty of throwing acid in his victim’s face five years ago, an attack which left his victim blind and disfigured for life. The perpetrator was sentenced to be blinded in both eyes, a 10 year prison sentence and was ordered to pay a fine.

Sharia Law.  If you get caught stealing, the victim can opt to have your arm chopped off.  The victim could have opted for Diyya " blood money " but I guess money isn't going to mean much when you are blind.

That is fantastic.the whole world should do the same and crime will drop dramatically.

This is the most naive statement I have ever heard and shows a complete lack of understanding in relation to what acts as a deterrent to crime.  Punishing offenders in such a way makes those angry at the offender feel better but does little to prevent such incidents in the first place.  Punishment produces politeness not morality, and the truly criminally minded just try harder to avoid the punisher or punishment, they become smarter and craftier criminals.  The only alternative is to create a totalitarian state where everyone feels watched by the authorities all the time and therefore inhibit the behavior permanently under an umbrella of anxiety, numbness, and hate (the emotions that punishment produces).
