Oregon Becomes First State to Impose Per-Mile Road Tax
« on: March 10, 2015, 11:03:53 AM »
http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2015/03/oregon-becomes-first-state-to-impose-per-mile-road-tax

Oregon will be the first state to impose a per-mile road tax. Drivers will pay a 1.5 cent tax on miles traversed through a device that plugs into your vehicle.
Truth About Cars reported:

Oregon will be the first to issue a per-mile road tax to refill its coffers.

Automotive News reports the state will offer two options to its motorists: pay at the pump, or pay a 1.5-cent rate per mile traversed. The latter will be conducted through a device that plugs into a vehicle’s OBD port, then gathers mileage data to determine how much the motorist will pay in tax.

Right now, the program — set to begin July 1 — will be implemented by the Oregon DOT in partnership with Sanef ITS Technologies America and Intelligent Mechatronic Systems, the latter supplying the aforementioned OBD mileage reader.

Up to 5,000 volunteers will participate in the initial program, which will compare the tax paid at the pump to the miles driven. The results will be turned over to ODOT, which will then determine if a motorist is given a refund or an invoice based on said findings

My auto insurance company offered to use similar technology to track how many miles I drive plus other data in order to save me on premiums. I declined.

While I'm against any ridiculous gas tax..better it be at the pump then by some device. That's a slippery slope we don't want to get on.

Trying to make up for not having sales tax?

Not to worry, Oregon has enough other taxes to make up for the lack of a sales tax. Our total tax bite is on par with most states, if not higher. I actually prefer the idea of a sales tax, but not as an add on to what we already pay. What I like about a sales tax is that everyone, not just Oregonians pay a sales tax if they buy products in our state.

Based on the article I read, the mileage tax is a substitute for a gas tax. Many of our roads and bridges are the shit. If there is no money to fix them under the current system and we honestly need to raise more revenue then doing it by charging people for the mileage they drive could be a solution. Like with the lack of a sales tax, people who are not Oregon residents, escape paying. They, meaning companies whose trucks are licensed elsewhere and yet tear up our highways and byways would be exempt from this tax.

I think it is an poorly thought out solution to a big problem.

At the risk of having to trade in my liberal badge, I must say that I am tired of these convoluted ways of exacting more taxes from people. Much of what state and local government has lost due to tax restrictions, they've more then made up for in fees and levies.

No it isn't. We get to vote on most taxes, but not fees. Oregonians obviously have not voted to institute a sales tax. We have voted on to increase local levies to provide more money to school districts, this has worked well for school districts in affluent neighborhoods such as where I live. It doesn't work in the less wealthy neighborhoods and small towns where schools are hurting as a result of a lack of consistent state funding.

Personally, I am all for a sales tax. Being a senior whose made most of the big ticket item purchases already, a sales tax would have less affect on me personally. What I really like about a sales tax is that everyone pays. You don't get to opt out of it if you are low income, even when living on public assistance or if you are not a resident of Oregon. There is currently no tax other than gas tax in Oregon which everyone pays regardless of their circumstances.

Very often folks will suggest that everyone should contribute. Shizzo was just posting about this in another thread recently. He believes everyone needs to pay their fair share. Sales tax is one way that this is guaranteed. Nobody escapes it. Nobody is paying for someone else's tax on purchases. I do think that food and other essentials should be exempt though.

Okay. I will buy a new car. Does this help? Anyway, with planned obsolescence things that used to last forever don't anymore. Even us old chaps have to keep on buying replacements.....make you feel better.

I favor a flat income tax and no sales tax, but I do agree that sales taxes allow you to control how much you pay to a certain extent.

I've moved further in this direction myself. What kind of effect do sales taxes have on an individuals purchasing power?  How much of an effect do sales taxes have on labor costs?  By that I mean, does it drive a business to see the cheapest possible labor costs by outsourcing?  I understand they already do.  I honestly don't know the answers.

I guess it depends on the amount of the sales tax.  Ours is just over 4 percent, which wouldn't be that bad if state income taxes were not so high.

I think a national sales tax could replace the income tax, but only if we amend the Constitution to ensure they cannot impose both.

One thing is certain, the government takes too much of my money and wastes it.

So true.  The more the government taxes the more inefficient it becomes.

Better this than those people who take the Government's (the people's) money and wastes it.

True.  Government takes too much money from hardworking Americans and redistributes it to (some) who abuse and waste it.
