80s Detroit
« on: March 11, 2015, 09:04:46 AM »
Tell me how bad was it really , was it really some lawless place no one ventured where you could easily be murdered if you went out at night? I ve heard it was the worlds most dangerous city in about 84?
Dam, id have needed all my MMA skills to live in that environment.

Downtown Cincinnati from 2000 to 2003. That was the closest ive seen to a true life ghetto warzone. Vine st was the road, never seen anything like it.

In the late 80s early 90s I lived in the D as a kid (actual city not the outskirts). We did normal stuff like went for bike rides to 711, dawn donuts, farmer jacks, friend's homes, and walked to/from school. Obviously the ghetto was bad, but there were areas that weren't  complete hellholes.

I think it's worse today.
Thinking about it I'm amazed my parents let us run so free.

There isn't much on the documentary front, but this has bit on Detroit at the time -

.

These are good to get a feel for New York -

.

.

Two of the Gold standards -

.

.

A good one if you understand German -

.

Good old PBS one from the 70's -

.

Then you've got Places like East St. Louis, etc.... that are rough too.

For Chicago, this series was a good, but depressing watch -

Back in the 80s and 90's, Los Angeles may have been worse than Detroit. NYC was also bad.

The top 10 most dangerous cities in 2014 were:

10)Birmingham, Alabama
9) Milwaukee
8 ) Rockford, Illinois
7) Baltimore
6) Little Rock, Arkansas
5) Cleveland
4) St Lous, Missouri
3) Memphis, Tenn
2) Oakland, California
1) Detroit

The irony here is that the populations in these areas are predominately black

Detroit is withering away.  People continue to flee.  The thing about cities like Detroit is that they are bad for so long no one bothers to cover the crime as much.

Another good Detroit documentary is "Who Killed Vincent Chin?" which is about a famous murder there that happened during the 80's. It touches on the decline of the auto industry a bit in it. It's hard to find, but someone posted it here -

It's no coincidence.
