it wasn't revenge....he's trying to find out the truth of who the Gods favor he's in conflict with the Nordic Gods and Christ, he said so to Athielstan earlier in the season

Well, the series has to end with Ragnar's death or his son Snake In The Eye becoming the warrior that avenges his father's death.
i think they've set up the series so that his son could take over. the show wouldn't be as good, no way. But they've given him a big enough role to lead it. I think they'll slow down the rapid aging now that they have ragnar bald, wrinkles and pissing blood.
