I know, that was absolutely crazy, especially way back in 1971-2.

I've read those books they were talking about.

The second one was very good in the first half with regards to contests and Arnold trying to control everything after he retired.

The second half was all Arthur Jones it went way overboard.

The third one i don't know if i want to read because all it's going to be is bashing 90's bodybuilding. The writer is one of these Ironage fucks. The fact that he is blind? is unreal for what i can see coming....

yea all these other guys can't admit that an arnold with a couple of months training was better than them after they busted their arses for months and months.

i still see arnold the deserved winner in 1980..

Arnold won easily. Pics say one thing, once you watch the video it's not even close. His structure was far and away number 1 and end of the day that kills it, size and cuts were pretty even across the board although Arnold's upper body was still the best. Zane/Mentzer 2 and 3. Boyer can say Arnold looked thin....in clothes. Who cares, underneath he was bigger than all of them.

And thin, seriously? If Arnold was thin when he dwarfed all of them what does that make them?

And Imagine if Mentzer was around having this powefull tool (the internet ) he probably had Arnold dead last that year .

Seems like only Platz and columbu  had Arnold as the winner in 1980 .

No wonder I'm obsessed  with pics  and videos from that contest lol

WooSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHh  find me the CBS footage !!!!!!

And one could suggest that your opinion differed from the judges when you lost contests as well, John.

The best one yet John, loved all the stories Boyer had to tell, and completely agree with his opinion of the modern day scene.Looking forward to part 2 of Samirs interview.Plus, any plans for a Danny Padilla one, would be interesting to hear his view on the 81 Olympia.

It's always hard to see things from the judges viewpoint. I tend to agree with you guys, when I see the pictures and video of the 1980 Mr. Olympia contest, I can see Arnold as the winner,
even though he wasn't at his best. However, almost everyone I've talked to who was at the show (Dickerson, Boyer, Samir, Bill Pearl) said Arnold shouldn't have been in the top five. The are
all adamant about it. Samir even said that Arnold is his hero and if he could have wished anyone would have won that year, he would have picked Arnold. But, he said Arnold was so off, that he
shouldn't have made the top five. And why did CBS Television refuse to air the footage? If Arnold looked like he could have won, they should have shown the footage with no hesitation. After all,
they paid something like $20K for the rights to film it plus traveling all the way to Australia and filming extra footage weeks in advance with Mentzer, Boyer, Dickerson and Zane.

I agree with you. I loved the first half of the second book, I thought it was fascinating stuff and I learned a lot of inside stuff that went on that I never heard before. But the detailed stuff about Arthur
Jones was very boring. I even told Randy Roach that and I think he got a little offended but I wish the second half of the book would have been as good as the first half. I know the third volume is going
to cover the 1980 and 1981 Mr. Olympia contests. Randy interviewed me about the '81 Olympia. I'm hoping it's good stuff. I know how hard and long Randy works on these books. It is absolutely amazing
that he is able to do all that research and incredible amount of writing being blind. Simply amazing. I wrote a book about 10 years ago and it was one of the hardest things I've ever done and my book
wasn't even half as long as Randy's books are.

John,

I certainly respect your take on things (notice I didn't use the word "opinion," which I abhor with a passion) and, since you've interviewed direct eyewitnesses to the '80 Olympia, I reckon that makes them, and by default, you, far more qualified to judge what really happened at that contest ...

... but on the other hand, those are subjective measures; pics and video are decidedly *not*.

I am a big Mentzer fan.  Mike and I were friends from '95 to shortly before his death.  He regarded me as a kind of prodigy apprentice and wrote about me in Muscular Development.  He, well ... exaggerated, and then some.  But I still loved the guy.

Based on everything I've seen, do I agree with Michael's assessment that he and Dickerson should've been the top two?

No.  Apart from Chris' quads, calves and back thickness, I was actually shocked that he placed so high.

Then again, from irrefutably untampered photographic evidence, I probably would not have placed Mike in the top two, either.  I agree with Boyer in that Arnold did look "skinny" in clothes; Mike said as much once in FLEX magazine.  I imagine that was a psyche-out ploy by Arnold to lull some of his "enemies" into a false sense of confidence ... or maybe Arnold just wore a really tight long-sleeved shirt that didn't emphasize his development too well :D

In the end, I've reviewed all of the footage, and Arnold still wins. &guy Walker looks bigger and thicker than Arnold just standing there, and some of the other guys probably had better abs/thighs (or whatever).

I definitely don't think Boyer says this out of jealousy or anything remotely of the sort, though.  He is an honorable dude that's always been rather candid about this, that and the other.

Some of you high-volume freaks might take note that Boyer says he got into his very biggest, and arguably best, shape, following a Yates-inspired routine for the '94 Master's Olympia.  And since I did know Mentzer at the time, I can also say that, by his accounts, Boyer consulted with him regularly regarding reducing exercises/bodypart and/or switching certain things up when the strength gains slowed.

Of course, to be totally fair, Boyer also admitted that he used more AAS and gH than he ever had before.  That and the balls-out training just might have something to do with him coming in big as a house in '94 :)

P.S. -- I'm one of the rare few folk who thought Robby was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too smooth that year and should've finished third behind Louie and Boyer.  Personally, I would've given the title to Boyer by a hair ... Lou was gigantic and fairly ripped, but his Pro Tan crap ran all about faster than Lance Armstrong would deny a doping allegation, plus his posing that year was so damned bad that a legitimately retarded person like Jason Genova could've matched his transitions and overall stage presence.

... well, that's an exaggeration, but you get my point.  Louie was a terrible poser and was apparently so damned stupid that, even after people (like his jerk-wad of an opportunistic asshole dad) tried to give him some pointers, he just went, "Uh, duh!" and did his own thing.

I disagree Boyer's assessment that the master's Olympia was his best condition. It was his biggest condition. He was in better shape though for the 1980 Olympia and his grand prix wins.

I agree with you. I thought Boyer's best shape was in 1981 when he won those Grand Prix events. I liked that he couldn't even remember that he won 7 shows that year.
