When I was in Italy I was told to never wear my backpack on my back, to keep it in front of me and also to put my wallet in my from pocket.
but we were told that was only when we were doing touristy stuff.

exactly: it's not italians that will pickpocket you, gypsy will do it.
police is not able to control them, there are too many of them lurking around monuments.

Not in italy mate, they even get paid approx  € 30 a day as a welfare aid.

But anyway, let's talk about usa, not italy.

Is it only a stereotype the "gentleman from the South "?

Texas considers themselves part of the south, but totally different IMO.  

ive never met any texans identify as southern
