Richie Blackmore vs Edward Van Halen:
Blackmore is the better musician. Awesome scales, solos, riffs, etc.  EVH is a drunken one trick pony.

Ian Gillian vs Roth, Hagar
Roth can barely carry a tune. Hagar has the hair of a black lesbian. Gillan blows them both out of the water on a bad day. Cherone comes the closest, but not close enough.

Ian Paice vs Alex Van Halen
Paice is technically perfect, in the same league as Carl Palmer and Buddy Rich. AVH has no training in the rudiments, can't read music, plays long shitty solos, hides behind enormous drum set and is an ugly chinaman.

Roger Glover vs Michael Anthony
Glover is a master of the bass guitar. Anthony is a short fat slob who can't play a bass line. EVH played the bass parts on the albums. Anthony looks like a donut maker and Wolfgang looks like a fucking whale.

Jon Lord vs EVH
EVH's boring self indulgent keyboard tinkering sucks the big one. Lord pisses all over him.

Conclusion: Deep Purple is superior to Van Halen.

How does this drummer compare to Alex Van Halen?

You should be comparing Deep Purple to Led Zeppelin. They are much more similar in sound and style, and were legendary at the same time. Deep Purple is not in the R&R Hall of Fame. What a fucking joke.

Blackmore was very talented but the only person I have heard that has a legato that even comes close to Van Halen is Holdsworth. And people geek out so much on evh technique they miss the tone and song writing.

When everyone heard Hendrix they started ripping him off.
When people heard Blackmore they continued to rip Hendrix off.
When people heard evh they started ripping off evh.
I'm not saying evh is better, but definitely more influential.

It's true. Edward has influenced every rock and metal guitarist that has come after in a way no one else has.
