At least a quarter of the land in those four states is developed. Land in 24 states, including Wisconsin, Texas and Maine, is worth less than $10,000 an acre, on average. In Nebraska, 92.7% of land is used for agriculture, the most of any state. Nevada has the largest share of federal land, covering 86.8% of the state. Connecticut has the least, just 0.1% of the state’s area. Land in the nation’s capital is worth $1.05 million an acre and 18% of land in Washington, D.C., is owned by the federal government.

Why does the federal government need so much land?
Strategic military bases, but most of the fed land is in the west where the mountain ranges run which they own. Also major water sources for the west.

Anyone know the amount of taxes these two guys pay for all that land?
Media mogul Ted Turner has won his fight against Taos County, getting a big break on property taxes. Turner owns the 600,000 acre Vermejo Ranch on the New Mexico/Colorado border.More than 30,000 acres of that sits in Taos County and was valued at $17.7 million by the assessors’ office. The taxes on that is $108,000 a year.However, the value was challenged arguing that the ranch should be classified as agricultural land because it’s used for logging and raising bison, dropping the annual taxes to $17,000 a year.
The report also says millionaires Jon Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen and Ted Turner have collected farm subsidies.“These individuals include Scottie Pippen and Ted Turner, respectively. Millionaires also receive state tax breaks on farm land. For example, Jon Bon Jovi paid property taxes of only $100 last year on his extensive real estate holdings in New Jersey that he uses to raise bees. At the same time, Bruce Springsteen received farm subsidies because he leases his property to an organic farmer,” the report explains.
