The reality is most men weren't the alpha male as teens, I'm sure there are numerous reasons but I'm sure varying stages of prepubescent development play a major role, thus there are many who feel socially awkward and stunted when it comes to the opposite sex.
You can build self esteem through physical exercise and various attractions but if someone is insecure and doesn't address that issue then he'll always be behind the eight ball.
