This fight of the century failed on all measures to resurrect a sport on its last legs. Yeah this fight was huge, epic etc... but the hundreds of other boxing matches that happen each year are lucky to even have 1/1000 of the prize money. This was supposed to be the fight that would bring interest back, but all I hear and see is how it failed to deliver.

A few weeks back I was at my brother's house and his son who is 12 was watching the Klitchko/Jennings fight with us. My brother and I grew up watching the great fighters. Sugar Ray, Hearns, Duran, Hagler, Tyson, Holyfield etc... We were amped for a decent heavyweight fight. My nephew mostly watches MMA. During the first round he makes a comment on why Jennings doesn't kick. We explain this is boxing and they can only punch. His response was "this is boring" and it was a boring fight. just Wlad hugging Jennings when he could. The young generation of fight fans don't give a fuck about boxing. It's all about MMA. Guys like myself are still holding on to hope of our youth when Boxing was epic and keep hoping for that match that redefines the sport but sadly it seems this was the last chance and failed.

People have a short memory. It was less than a year ago that Mayweather did the exact same thing to Maidana. Doing the same thing and expecting a different result is madness. Like expecting a UFC card to come to fruition without the best fights being cancelled for injuries or drugs or John Jones being an idiot.

Boxing is thriving right now........lots of great lighter bodyweight class fighters making big noise.

They're missing the great promoter. Don King, although a crook was great at promoting fights. Dana White did a fantastic job with UFC. Boxing needs a great promoter to get these boxers exposure so people can get excited about it.

Boxing needs a few major changes including:

1) One governing world body (similar to FIFA)
2) One championship belt per division
3) Less divisions and no catchweight BS
4) Proper scrutiny on judging

With all that said,

check the tv schedule more boxing on than in years....hbo, showtime plus major networks and sportschannels...mma is going down the toilet due to lack of stars. say mma first name comes to mind ronda lousey, second name brock lesnar oh he's in wwe again....third name ken shamrock,oh he's in an old age home.... you get the idea...

Boxing will never die, and always be bigger than MMA, folks should just accept it. There is lots of interest in the lighter fighters. Lots of interest in the foreign markets including Russia, and even China. Big Tv contracts that aren't a bust like most of the MMA ones, etc.... All it needs is an exciting heavyweight on the scene, and it will be in top form again.

Finally there are some good young boxers starting to come through.

Yes, "boxing will always be here" just like lacrosse, bowling and softball will "always be here"

Yes, the popular English fighter will still fill out an arena in England. The popular Mexican fighter will still fill out an arena in Mexico, etc etc.

Yes, hardcore fans like a few that we have here will continue to tune in.

But you just simply cannot compare boxing now to what it was 30 years ago.

The OP is spot on. The young kids now a days look up to the MMA guys. They could care less about boxing.

UFC will have a cult following and thats it. there trying to make it legit and clean which is like polishing shit not mentioning you cant fight anywhere outside the UFC a and the best fighter is lucky to make $2 mill a fight with no say in the contract negotiations and the fighters cant tell dana white to go get fucked if they feel like it

while boxing is making headline news around the world once again covered by the world media. the 2 best fighters in the world made $180mill
who in there right mind would even think about wanting to be in MMA unless you cant cut it a a boxer. a boxer has freedoms a UFC fighter will never have
and the prestige of being a heavyweight boxing champ will always out class the prestige of a UFC heavyweight champ fuk me the UFC champ is a mexican heavyweight lol

One guy in the match was 38 years old and the other was 36 years old. Vlad is damn near 40.

All 3 of those guys will be gone in a few short years.

It was a great PPV success, no question about it but who brings in those numbers in 3 or 4 short years?

Boxing vs MMA is like Soccer vs Rugby League (or Rugby)

Both disappoint so much with bullshit decisions but they were in first and too ingrained in people. People still get hyped up for the World Cup even when it's corrupt as fuck.

With all that said,

Boxing > MMA

Boxing began as "prize fighting" and the name of the game has always been making $$ by putting on a fight.
Some great fighters with charisma along with a long parade of characters like Don King are the real side of boxing.
Cashing in on hyped up matchups is what made the sport then as today.

For example, the epic Alli vs Frazier bouts of the 1970's were what Pacman vs Mayweather is now.
