I suspect shoes "curl" more so when they are pointy and narrow at the front because nobodies toes fit into those points. Therefore being empty, there is nothing to hole them flat. Look at a pair of well used cowboy boots and you'll see the same thing.

I've seen photos of him where he looked worse then he does in this one. At least he's not wearing tights when street clothes would be more appropriate.
