How many times was that crazy SOB locked up in the loony bin? I heard he was running around Santa Monica nude at night directing traffic. That DHEA will F you up. No joke. The most anyone should take long term is 5mg. I'm sure Mentzer's dose(s) was no different than everyone else who uses 100mg then wonder why they very serious side effects.

Many people who were actually there have verified that Mentzer was severely bi-polar.
Ken Sprague Sr told me Mentzer would try to clean the streets around Venice during his manic phases. Someone within the Weider organization took pity on Mike and helped get his Heavy Duty training business going when they saw him homeless. Can anyone else verify that?

One thing is also clear, Mike never got passed the infamous 1980 Olympia.
I think Mike could have taken 1981 off and come back to win the O in 1982,83.

Maybe his life would have been different if had tried that?
Sadly, we'll never know and it looks like heart failure took him .

I was always a huge fan of Mike and remember seeing him win the Universe on network TV.
His original Heavy Duty routine kept me in the sport when I was ready to quit.
I went to one of his seminars but never got to talk to the man one on one.

RIP Mike, you are missed.

His problems (mental and physical) were mainly caused by his amphetamine abuse. The guy probably had mental issues even before he started bodybuilding. The roids certainly didn't help.

Unfortunately after the 1980 mr Olympia it was the beggining of a long downward spiral

As a reference the lead singer was short standing at 5'4

Howard - you come across as a normal respectful dude... This kind of post is what we used to have on the boards back in the day..
I always liked Mentzer too - but I do think he was a bit "out there" ... I heard once a long time ago about him being bi-polar too but kind of dismissed it. I definitely heard he was a huge speed junkie though..

If we are talking about the same person then Ken Sprague has little to no room to talk about anyone's "problems". And I am certain you know whereof I speak, my friend.

And I agree, Mentzer was a real inspiration. If only he had turned his frustration at losing to Arnold into training instead of whining. In one article I read he was very concerned that steroids had affected his mind more than his body.

Joanne Sharkey still runs his website. She answers the phone personally, no secretaries, nothing.

She sells his memorabilia and she gives short seminars on his philosophy of training.

Nobody knew him better than her. She is getting old and she doesn't make much money off of his site, but she is the "friend" that everyone is referring to. She is the one who bailed him out or went and picked him up when he 'lost it'
