Ya can't really hate on the source, thinkprogress, because it's a FOX host destroying Ben Carson on the matter.

Ben Carson Unable to to Answer Simple Questions about his Tax Plan

Dr. Ben Carson, now a Republican presidential candidate, has long proposed a “flat tax” for the country, citing the Bible’s tithing as his inspiration. As he reiterated Sunday morning on Fox News Sunday, he supports the idea of a “proportional tax,” one in which “you pay according to your ability.” A flat tax would require everybody in the country to pay the same percentage of their income as tax, regardless of how much or how little they make, and most variations include eliminating deductions and loopholes. Carson thinks it’s “condescending” to suggest it’s not fair that poor people can’t afford to pay their share because “poor people have pride, too” and “don’t want to be just taken care of.”

But on Sunday, host Chris Wallace confronted Carson with tax experts, who found that to raise the same amount of revenue the federal government currently takes in, the government would have to impose a 20 percent tax across the board. (The Tax Policy Center argues it would have to be at least 25 percent.) “Middle incomes would get a tax hike and wealthy families would get a tax cut,” Wallace explained. Carson countered that he simply didn’t “agree with that assessment.” He then admitted that according to the economists he’s consulted, if loopholes and deductions are eliminated, it would still have to be between 10 and 15 percent — but it wouldn’t be 20 percent.

Wallace followed up by asking about low-income families, who not only don’t pay taxes, but usually receive an earned income tax credit instead. “Now you’ll have them pay 10 to 15 percent of income they have — or 20 percent if my experts are right. A lot of independent studies say the people that make like bandits in this are the wealthy.”

Carson could only then offer a vague explanation about how his tax plan is part of “an overall complex program” that involves “reorienting the way we do things in government.” The candidate said he wants to run the government “more like a business” instead of “this great inefficient behemoth we have right now,” including generating revenue by “utilizing our energy resources.” Part of his plan also includes “revamping corporate taxes and bringing in money that’s overseas by giving a tax holiday,” claiming that would bring in “$2 trillion right there.”

He probably knew all of that, but just didn't want to seem like the grind that was fucking over the poor. I could care less. Make it 30% across the board for higher income folks, like me, and let the poverty stricken have a pass. Let's get this fucking country back on track.

people don't realize two things...

#1) Poor people ALREADY spend all of their $, despite being taxed almost nothing.  If you tax them 25%, their spending will drop 25%, and that's a HUGE hit for every business in America.  Rich people aren't going to spend more $ - they already have the things they want.   Cut purchases at walmart and target and restaurants by 25% and watch the economy collapse.

#2) The magic tax number would be 25%.  or more.  This nonsense about "17% tax works for everyone" is universally agreed upon to be too low... well, everyone except Ben Carson.

he's pandering with this talk.  And he's a reckless loose cannon.  All those quotes, dropping Hitler's name, etc... he's an extremist and frankly, he's immature.  We need a shrewd president who can control his emotions.  Nobody here is going to say Carson is shrewd and can control his emotions, can they?

in some ways i agree.  we need a republican who can finally play politics as good as obongo.  we'll see more progress from that than from mr. innocent goes to washington.  lovely story but less reality than the real world.

this and mr. carson thinks semi-auto rifles should be banned in big cities.  sorry but the same rules should apply to everyone.  people in cities probably could use a 20-30 round magazine even more than rural areas.

I had NO IDEA he had anti-gun leanings.  That's awful.   SO MANY repubs have been kneepadding the guy.  I am guessing he is just good at hiding that.

This.

it's common sense, but many people don't realize it.   They think Rich people will suddenly save $10 million a year, and spend it at walmart and mom/pop stores, as poor folks do now.

No, no, no, the super-wealthy will put that $ into precious metals, foreign currency, etc.

Most ecnomists get this, which is why it's only the fringe candidate like Carson that attempt to push the idea on people.

This interview highlights two things:

  • first, the problem with vainglorious people who are smart enough to do very well in a field that's generally perceived to be very difficult. Carson has come to believe that his skills and abilities in neurosurgery are widely applicable across other fields as well. After all, surely brain surgery is easier than tax policy, especially to his superior intellect; and
  • second, the problem with people who think that their beliefs actually affect reality. Carson believes that 10 to 15 is enough because... well... tithing or whathaveyou. The bottom line is that what he believes summarily overrides contrary positions, even if they are supported by evidence.

Ben Carson may be a great neurosurgeon. But based on everything I've seen about him, he'd make a shitty President. This interview only reinforces that perception.

Yup poor people will spend every penny keeping business going.

Welfare is actually better than being broke from an economic wievpoint.
