Keto Vs. Low Fat = Interesting Blood results
« on: May 29, 2015, 05:25:30 AM »
So i ran the anabolic diet for about 2 months. Keep in mind, my diet consisted of lots of greens, fiber supps, high quality fish oil, wild fish, grassfed meats and high quality foods (not bargain chicken breasts or crap tilapia), niacin at 1G a day.

LDL 191
Total 260 something
HDL 50
Triglycerides 95

Switched to IIFYM high carb, low fat 40/40/20 with the suggestions from many kind getbiggers

LDL 100
Total 150
HDL 40
Triglycerides 46

The most interesting part is the insane drop in Trig and LDL as these are arguably the most important health markers I think. Both tests done fasted.

AnywAy, i think there is a place for high fat diets but your genetics must be able to accommodate. Mine did not, and I am glad I had tests to show this.  I look and feel so much better on current hi carb diet and my brain works again. On hi fat low carb my brain was incredibly foggy. Initially it felt good but as days went on, I was feeling that my social skills and work were suffering.

well, HDL/LDL ratio matters
your HDL decreased too

however since LDL dropped much more - your ratio improved, which is pretty good

didnt expect that, however high fat diets tend to increase both hdl and ldl...

you probably rather relied on saturated fats during your keto diet right?

if you had eaten lots of avocado, nuts, salmon etc your bloodwork wouldve probably been better on keto

whatever, those numbers you now have are very very good imo.

I've done keto and lost lots of weight, definitely noticed an effect on the brain.

interesting results

was the protein constant across both diets with just a swap of fat for carbs?

which diet did you feel better on and have better workouts (I'm guessing the 2nd but just curious)

The thing is, i was eating a very high quAlity diet about 6 days a week. Salmon almost daily, GF beef, olive oil by the spoonful, walnuts often, i could go on and on. I was on 600mg of test though but that had never skewed my lipids badly in the past

Protein stayed constant, never been really high on protein before. Mainly three squares a day with some meat as the focus and then snacks of oil, nuts, shakes, etc.

But yeah, pro the same. Just replaced virtually all carbs with fat.

I didnt feel workouts change much. Fats will definitely provide energy.

Assuming cholesterol is the culprit to heart disease and not inflammation.

I agree with most of that. As i feel sugar is likely the main issue in most heart and disease issues

even I find this thread interesting

were you on 600mg on BOTH tests or just the 1?

From what i recall, being totally honest here...the bad lipids was done on 600mg, but i continued that dose probably 1/4 way into iiFym low fat diet, so drug use was the variable that changed. But previous tests done while in the 400-600 range of Test dose never skewed much off from usual values with a balanced diet

This.  If you weren't on the same dosages then the test results mean nothing as a comparison of diet.

Awesome thread, thanks for sharing!

I feel way better with carbs in, as well.  For me, they seem to have a far more significant role in brain function and mood than fats and protein.

I continue to look for ways to improve my diet, balancing each nutrient with consideration for not only my own experience, but that of other bodybuilders, fitness enthusiasts, etc.

This information helps -- very interesting.
