Are Tennis players the most fit athletes?
« on: May 29, 2015, 07:17:32 AM »
How often do you see a fat Tennis Player?  Pro Football has its share of fat asses, Baseball has even more, Basketball has its share and Golf has a fucking lot.  I guess Soccer doesn't have many either, but Tennis seems to be the sport of the fitness elite.

Sev, speak on this phenomenon

No, I would not say they are the most fit athletes. There are A LOT of sports where you wont find overweight/fat athletes and people who have elite fitness: swimming, gymnastics, soccer (as you stated), volleyball, etc.

Id say gymnasts may be up there in terms of being the most elite fit, especially with the way they can move and contort their body.

I go even further and claim female gymnasts are the most fit, fitter than male gymnasts, more capable, more flexible and more skilled.

Gymnasts are some of the best BUILT athletes but for conditioning in mainstream sports (not ultra marathoners or iron-mans) I'd give it to soccer players.   Skinny twinks with gas for hours!

Im partial to rugby players as the best hybrid of conditioning, power and physique

Something like Tennis has a factor the other games mentioned don't. An opponent. That makes predictions less of a factor. Also eye/hand coordination factor with hitting the ball as it comes to you other events don't.

There was one chubby female tennis player. She must have fattened up big time post career to be that heavy while being a top athlete. The William's sisters are not gonna be small either when they stop playing.

But female tennis players have some very sexy bodies.

Have you ever "known" any female gymnasts in the Biblical sense, DS?

Kinda of. There's a former national level gymnast who trained in my gym. She had to stop because she got serious lower back problems. She told me that all the male gymnasts are marginally the same size as the women, women tend to have better legs, more acrobatic skills and better flow in the floor routines. She said that some of the gals can hold the iron cross, not to mention the balance beam requires good everything, strength, balance and flexibility. Men may excel further than women in strength department alone, but when it comes to perfect flow, graceful performance without those ridiculous facial expressions women win by a mile.

There are loads of female tennis players carrying a few too many extra pounds. Loads of skinny fat men in the pro ranks too. It's only really the top male tennis players who are serious athletic specimens + the Williams sisters and a couple of lesbians.

I'd say those involved in the elite levels of combat sports such as wrestling, boxing, mma, even sports like judo are the most impressive overall athletes (ignoring the obese heavyweights). Their combination of strength, speed and stamina is hard to match.

Athletes with most VO2 Max recorded tend to be cyclists.

An iron man triathlete goes through 180miles over 8 hours at a staggering speed....that's virtually inhuman. I don't think tennis is even close. Going 12 rounds is much harder so I would put boxers above that.

If its a mix of power and stamina I would go for welter to middleweight boxers, perfect mix of stamina and power

Rugby league players are very fit for the size they carry...

For pure cardio, cyclists ... Those crazy fuckers spend weeks non stop

Vo2 max I think Rowers are up there...

Hockey players are well balanced: good cardio, strength, explosiveness, skills.
