It'll sound like ass.

Metallica was something, oh ... 25 fuckin' years ago!

Since then, James has struggled having exhausted all his goldmine of grade-A riffs in the '80s, Lars has continued to become less and less interested in maintaining his once-cool (but never amazing) drum chops and Kirk's grown not one iota in his guitar playing abilities. Heck, guy's regressed, arguably.

Metallica's been a shit stew of failed experiments and piss-poor album abortions.

It's difficult to even conceive that this is the same band that once recorded MONOLITHIC extreme metal albums like Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets.

Meltdown complete. Thanks for tuning in.

I agree, Metallica sucks major dick. They never got to be better musicians after MoP, that was their peak really and only their third album out of how many?

Metal and rock in general has stagnated though. You get the metalcore screaming type of stuff which can be good if done right, and then the progressive stuff which is boring for the most part, then the djent which sucks ass, and the various undergroudn extreme metal.

Its very hard to find good music these days. I can't even find any decent electronic artists who've made anything decent in the last 5 years... Unless someone wants to inform me on where to look for good tunes

That's because a lot of the tunes on those albums were co-written and scored by Dave Mustaine.

To be honest, without him, they went down hill pretty damn quickly.

Um... musically arranged.

A lot of the guitar riffs and how things were put together was done by Mustaine before he was kicked out.

Ok, not being a dick, just didn't get writing vs. scoring is all.

I did not think you were being a dick all.

I was a music major for a couple of years before going the CS route and it's even possible that what I defined is confusing for anyone.

I'm glad you asked me to clarify.

Was a massive fan of Metallica (1981-1993). Not a fan of POPtallica.

Even the ballady tunes from Black make me cringe anymore. Opening notes of Unforgiven make my skin crawl. Still like "Don't Tread on Me" and the heavier songs, though.

Metal ... has stagnated. Its very hard to find good music these days.

Could not disagree more, friend.

There is so much unreal and freakish metal these days it is a wonderful time to be a fan. And to have the long history with the style to appreciate the exploding legacy to be found deep within the grooves of so many young and explorative musicians.

I liked a lot of ... The Black Album.

Love how the self (eponymously)-titled Metallica album has become essentially re-titled "officially" by the masses as The Black Album. ;D

For the record, despite Metallica being a solid, well recorded and important heavy metal album, I could never warm to it. And the hits just grate on me like little else. I mean, every time I hear "Enter Sandman" or, as another here says, "The Unforgiven" or "Nothing Else Matters", I wanna leap into an incinerator.

A brute virus implanted itself into the mainframe during this era and has continued to decimate the band further with each passing year.

Best thing now is for a plane carrying the band members to crash nose first into the side of a mountain.

"Black" is just easier to say than "self (eponymously)-titled Metallica album" is all.

They do, and so do Anthrax.

Slayer was the best of the big 4.

I do typically geek out over Mustaine.

Haha.  Had me rolling on this thread.  I'd say everything after the black album was rough.  Lars playing has disintegrated over the years.  Back in the late 80s, they were a machine.  Hard to believe they've been playing Creeping Death for 30 years.  Die, die, die...haha. They've accomplished a huge amount over the years, but the songwriting simply was not there for so many of their last album over the past 20 years.
Even Newsted leaving impacted them.  That long haired Truillo is just not that like likable.
At least they are nowhere near the atrocity Kiss is.  A great example of how album sales, doesn't equal good songs or musicianship.

Disliked the album instantly when it came out.  I was very disappointed as they were my favorite at the time.  The Unforgiven might be the worst song they've ever written besides Hero of the Gay.

I do like Of Wolf and Man on that album but that's basically it.  Sandman doesn't irk me since it's more about Mariano Rivera to me than Metallica.

One song since that album that I really, really like is "All Nightmare Long".   Song rips.  Sounds like something they would have made in the 90s
