Hope it is an Aston Martin for a hit like that.  Sounds like a load of shit, but then again us getbiggers don't accept offers for less than a million net, so in the grand scheme of things it is peanuts.

Something is off about this story.. I provide a car for top producers but it doesn't even make sense to deduct that from their pay..  No way its 13K a year!

Also - either that is in your "contract" or it isn't.. It didn't just change.. Do you actually have a contract or is this just the employment paperwork we are talking about?

And company cars. Must be at least one other here?

I'm due to take up a new position at a company on Monday. We've negotiated a salary. Received my contract yesterday and I'm getting stung 13k a year since the vehicle is for personal use also. So I'm basically getting 13k less on my negotiated salary without having been informed of that during my last interview.

Go into the office, ripped it up in front of the Managing Director, throw a double bicep and walk out?

Or is this standard? In the past when having company cars I've never heard of such shit.

So what ??, I can get free Audi 4WD & petrol or Subaru turbo, but I drive my own Wrangler  ;)

The use of a company car is not typically part of a compensation package. If they are charging $13,000/year for personal use that amounts to 20-25% of the yearly mileage on the vehicle that is outrageous.

Take the $13,000 in salary in you pay and use your own car. Or go buy a small economy car and beat the crap out of that.

At $13,000 a year for weekend use you're getting hosed and they are financing a new car every other year off your back.

A place I worked out of college gave me a company vehicle and fuel card. They told me with all the maintenance and fuel and price of the car it was worth about 11k a year. They only docked me $53 every two weeks. This was 2006. I'd never take that deal they are pushing on you.

This. How could you negotiate a salary and then find out it's $13K less because they're lending you a car? This didn't come up before? At $130K a year that's a tenth of your salary! If this is a legit story it sounds really sketchy

I'm not required to pay anything for my company car I was given, but I always make sure and tip the driver and the bartender when we head out.

Don't sign the contract. Call their HR Department person that sent you the offer and let them know you're not signing the contract or reporting to work on Monday because of their "after the fact" negotiation tactic.

Be forceful, it will be the only time you ever have this type of leverage again.

Is this 13k in tax? Or the company is reducing your salary because of the car?

If the latter, that seems quite the piss take. You have to wonder what other stuff they'd pull.

Unless your current job is quite good - I'd take the new one but keep looking for something else on the offchance they are a bunch of tightasses.

This. If the company takes your money for providing you a car for personal use that's a bunch of bollocks, but if it's tax deduction it's legit and they can't do anything about it (other than paying you a higher salary to compensate for it but no one's gonna do that). Dunno how your country's tax authority handles non-cash benefits, but here you get charged for everything you get off of the company that can also be used privately. Phone contracts, cars, tablets etc. For cars I think it's 1% of the new value of the car + a big chunk of the insurance and taxes you'd pay otherwise over here. Also if it's the man taking your $$$ you should've known. If the company is pulling some retarded shit after the fact, call them out on it. Unless you're making so much $1000 bucks a month don't really matter.

If you don't own a car and need one in order to perform your work duties, then there is little that you can do, besides buying a cheap car on the side and asking for your 13k back (while incurring the costs of your own car).

If you already have a car and this is their way of slashing 13k off of your salary, renegotiate and tell them that this is not part of the contract you signed.

Thought he owned his own business... Either way, he is getting owned with a 13k reduction in salary for being "given" a company car.

Hosed it an understatement. You are being charged the full price of a lease and then some!  I had company cars for many years and def would not take a car for 11k.

Depends on the location - is it the US? I know he quoted dollars but he may have converted it.

In the UK - you'd pay tax for the car which would be higher the less mileage you did. You'd also pay tax on fuel allowance.

If it's for the lease - that's a lot of car in the US for over $1,000 a month. Tell them you will take a bicycle to work and just use the car for business use and zero personal use.
