This fight was a complete work. I think Bellator wanted to boost Kimbo's MMA CV and decided that by knocking out a "legend" it would help set the stage for future Kimbo fights against younger talent.
It shouldn't surprise anyone, as Shamrock has been known to work fights all throughout his career. Keeping in mind that Ken is 51 years old, he isn't going to fight for any titles and is at a severe disadvantage against the vast majority of fighters in his weight class.
Think back to the Rich Franklin fight, where he took a clear dive and because he didn't time himself right, he tried to recover by going for one of his trademark "ankle locks".

Bellator officials probably told them both that it needs to go to the ground for a bit, so that Kimbo can appear to be struggling, but no grip should be so tight as to cause a tapout or even too much exhaustion.

Then, once they're up, Ken is to take what appears to be the only real shot delivered (the hook that actually put Shamrock out). Ken is a veteran and he could have easily had his hands up as to not take such a perfect shot, but he didn't and I think that was premeditated.

This makes for an easy pay day.
