Scarface was a great movie but it's legacy has been tarnished by the fact that every wannabe thug, ghetto rat tries to impersonate the title character. :-\

Some of these movies we seem to dislike have skyrocketed into the Billion Dollar atmosphere.

According to Box Office Mojo here are the top ten worldwide money making films of all time

Avatar   $2.8 Billion
Titanic   $2.2 Billion
Avengers   $1.5 Billiion
Furious 7   $1.5 Billion
Avengers: Age of Ultron   $1.3 Billion
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2    $1.3 Billion
Frozen      $1.3   Billion
Iron Man   $1.2   Billion
Transformers: Dark of the Moon   $1.1   Billion
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King   $1.1

You have to add 'Gone With the Wind' in their someplace if the figures were adjusted for inflation. Currently at 1.6 Billion.

BOXOFFICEMOJO.COM ... a darn good site if you are interested in the movie biz. Also IMDB.com

box office takings aren't a measure of how good or bad a film is. especially with like s of the popcorn fodder above which will generally make bank no matter how crap it is. the transformer films being a case in point.

1939 is generally thought to be the finest year for films and such classics as "The Wizard of Oz" and "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" bear witness to this.

"Harvey" is a superb film and I recently viewed it again on Blu-Ray in a stunning transfer.   For me, "Casablanca" eclipses "Citizen Kane" as the best film ever  but I can understand the reasoning behind so many choosing the latter as the combined efforts of all involved make it an excellent choice.

BRAD, It's difficult to argue with your statement that a movie's financial success is not a measure of how good that movie was, but within the eyes of all individuals who were involved within he production of that financially successful film .... it was definitely a great movie.

And 'great' movies make 'everything' ever greater when those great residuals start arriving in your mailbox.

One day I gotta explain how 'residuals' work within  the movie and tv production biz.

it might inspire some of you to look into  the possibilities.

Yeah, lots of movies are bad.  He means movies that are undeservedly acclaimed.  Critical or commercial successes that didn't deserve.

Citizen Kane - Cures insomnia.
Easy Rider - 2 self-satisfied guys go around affirming their views and a 3rd guy helps.
Mad Max 1 - When nothing happens it's not always 'suspense.'  Sometime it's just 'boring.'
Footloose - The preacher was absolutely right.  Dancing leads to sex.  Cringeworthy.
Dirty Dancing - As above, but starring Patrick Sleazy as the middle aged lothario.
Leon - It's not about a hit man.  This is a film about pedophilia being ok.  This film is not ok.
Iron Men - RDJ?  I'm not saying it didn't work.  I'm saying that Iron Man is possibly bisexual.  Certainly campy.

Honorable Mention: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly.  Yeah, he's a legend.  He did some slow moving shit tho.

Oh, shit, forgot. This may be the Beatles of overrated films.

Citizen Kane comes to mind. It wasn't terrible, but I feel people just have this idea it was great and if they don't agree, that somehow they are stupid.

Citizen Kane is a long, drawn out piece of shit loaf! They should be praising Welles's "Touch of Evil", not that one.

Also not a huge fan of Star Wars, Goonies gets too many props also. Scarface is a fine film, but overblown, Carlito's Way is much finer film.

I love Scarface, but Carlito's Way is an all-time favorite. Back when DePalma still had chops. And screw you anti-Costello critics. He sounds exactly the way my SoCal ass wants a Bostonian gangstah to sound: "You recall ahh little chat ... little boys? Suckin' on their peckas, etc., and so fawth."

Fight Club grew on me (Inception, too, later). The book was SO good, it didn't hold up at first (same with Green Mile, which still doesn't). Love it now - even the author thinks Fincher outdid his book. I do like Citizen Kane as well, mostly for how it changed narrative structure. Can't sit through GwtW or Lawrence of Arabia, though.

Not sure how Dark Knight Rises is rated, but I f'n hated it. First time Nolan let me down. And I'm the only person I know that thought the original Old Boy was cheesy as hell.

Not sure if any of those films are rated highly tbh. Just generic sequels living off their predecessors.

I'm gonna take some heat from this one but I think 2001 is overated

There's some excellent scenes but overall if you're invited to a sci-fi Saturday night party and you find out they're playing 2001...how stoked are you really gonna be?  What if they said they're playing Aliens...or Predator...or Bladerunner or Star Trek II or The Thing...or Back to the Future.  Don't lie now :)

Are you high?  Shawshank Redemption is one of the top 20 greatest movies of all time.

Agreed. One of the greats.

Movies, like music and art, is just WAY too subjective. I mean, some people think Shawshank Redemption is one of the greatest movies (I agree), and others think its way overrated.
