"yes, the flag is still on the moon, but you can't see it using a telescope. I found some statistics on the size of lunar equipment in a Press Kit for the Apollo 16 mission. The flag is 125 cm (4 feet) long, and you would need an optical wavelength telescope around 200 meters (~650 feet) in diameter to see it. The largest optical wavelength telescope that we have now is the Keck Telescope in Hawaii which is 10 meters in diameter. The Hubble Space Telescope is only 2.4 meters in diameter - much too small!"

There are different types of telescopes. Not all have lens. Some use radio waves. You mentioned showing pics of other planets and galaxies, etc. Take a read of the Hubble Telescope.
Also, scientists are looking at different things. Who wants to look for a flag on the moon? What scientific purpose does that serve?

No we cannot see planets around other stars.  We can detect them from the change in brightness when they pass in front of their star, or the wobble of the star as its planets revolve around them, as well as the effect the gravity lens formed by the star and its planets has on the stars behind them.  But we have never imaged an exoplanet.
