What caused it and what's the treatman/cure?

It's usually idiopathic in etiology, sometimes associated with herpes outbreak but nobody really knows.  Basically one of the facial nerves becomes inflamed and unable to function, hence the one-sided facial paralysis.

It clears up on its own in most cases within a couple months, but if it's severe enough it can leave lasting nerve damage.  Traditionally treated w a corticosteroid, eg prednisone/methylprednisone, to quell inflammation...gabapenti n has been used to manage the neuropathic pain.

Just a freak issue, thankfully it's not too common
