If you make 20-30K a year in NYC, yes, youre pretty much starving, especially if you have a family!

But I know people who make between 30-40K a year and have like 3-4 roommates.

It really all depends on your living situation and lifestyle.

It depends, Manhattanites and recent gentrification trends tilt a lot of the wage statistics. That being said, many of the hourly employees that are left in NYC are either holding on dearly to rent controlled apts that they've had before the real estate boom, renting with (many times lots of) roommates, or moving deep into the outer boroughs where it's cheaper.

Most working class folks I know now usually have a regular job, plus a part time side hustle.

This sums it up. I know a teacher for NYC who is a bartender 2-3 nights a week to have extra cash in her pocket. Ive known a few truck drivers to bounce on the weekends or something. This is definitely not uncommon to have a part time side "hustle" job.
