Dark colors, brow and black, in nature represents conniving, aggression, cowardliness, unreliable, dishonest, shady, hiding, dubious, nasty, untrustworthy, etc etc. Think about it.
Oddly enough, Technicolor was capable of being very subtle in it's appearance. It was David O' Selznick, who insisted that "Gone With the Wind" be designed with very saturated colors that perpetuated the myth that Technicolor could only portray vivid colors.
