Because of social media and the 24 hour news stream?  Throughout time, there are changes in society or revolutions over time, but does social media and the internet speed that process up? It seems to me the Avalanche can gain steam a bit faster because of all of these different avenues of media. Is the collective consciousness stirring?

Yes but they also fizzle out just as fast.  People are getting information overload and tune out quickly.
