Despite his fiery immigration rhetoric, is Donald Trump actually a supporter of amnesty?

Appearing on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Friday, host Joe Scarborough asked Trump what he would do about the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants living in the country once America secured its southern border. After arguing the real number of illegal immigrants is much higher and saying the first thing America needs to do is “take the bad” illegal immigrants and “get them the hell out,” Trump sounded like he was open to providing some type of pathway to legalization for the remainder.

“And then the other ones — and I’m a very big believer in merit system, I have to tell you,” Trump said. “Because some of these people have been here, they’ve done a good job, you know, in some cases sadly they’ve been living under the shadows.”

“We have to do something,” he continued. “So whether it’s merit or whether it’s whatever, but I’m a believer in the merit system. If somebody’s been outstanding, we try and work something out.”

Disappointing, but not surprising.

The depressing reality though that is that most of the Republican field has endorsed amnesty in one form or another. So this isn't much of a surprise. Trump is using his own vocabulary, but he's echoing the same amnesty talking points you could hear from Marco Rubio... or Barack Obama.

During Friday's interview, Trump said the U.S. should take a two-step approach to the 11 million undocumented immigrants currently living in the country.

"Well, the first thing we do is take the bad ones — of which there are, unfortunately, quite a few," said Trump, who owns three New Jersey golf courses and once owned three Atlantic City casinos. "We take the bad ones and get 'em the hell out. We get 'em out."

But he said the country should take a different approach with "the other ones" — i.e., undocumented immigrants who have "done a good job" since arriving in the U.S.

"I'm a very big believer in the merit system," Trump said. "I have to tell you: Some of these people have been here, they've done a good job. You know, in some cases, sadly, they've been living under the shadows. ... If somebody's been outstanding, we try and work something out.

"But before we do anything, we have to secure the border because the border is like having no border," he added.

Trump changed back this weekend.   Will now repeal amnesty and dream.

i agree with every single thing he laid out today. its a bold position that will have the support of most americans should he actually be elected. supposedly he is working with Sen. Jeff Session on the immigration stuff, the guy who is imo the single most unsung, underrated person in congress when it comes to trying to bring attention to the immigration crisis. smart move by trumps team to get this guy on board

Excellent move by Trump by linking up with Jeff Sessions.

He has been the gold standard for immigration reform over the past few years.

The most credible voice in congress.

We should not forget that this summer, Trump was okay with letting tens of millions of illegals stay here.   A few days later, he called for mass deportations. 

MASSIVE position change, so quickly.  IMO, that's not a position he believes in strongly - but one that he decided to use as a rallying cry to get people behind him.  Do I believe trump wants to set up camps for 30 million people, ten feet south of the TX border, where people set up tent cities, with rape, murder, starvation and disease running rampant?

I don't think trump truly believes it - I think he gets in office, and lets congress kill it, so he can blame this or that.   So aside from that, and vague "greatness", I don't know what the man believes in.

I disagree with the republican frontrunner here.   

Just because these daily lawbreakers haven't been caught doesn't mean they should be allowed to stay.

Trump lines up pretty well with the democrats on this issue?   Sad.

Trump will make a deal on amnesty like anything else.  He will say its the best deal in the history of deals and the wall will be 2 inches high and 2 feet long but still be yyyuuugggeee!!!!  For people like Trump - this is all a game - he makes his ties overseas, hires polish scabs on his jobs, hires more H1B people at Mira lago in FL than he does native americans etc. 

I just cant and dont trust this guy from what i have seen. 

You know when i realized he was such a liar - the birther issue.  He said he had a team of investigators down in Hawaii and he could not believe what they were finding out about obama.   Guess what - that was a lie!!!  He never sent anyone but was playing us for suckers.

Well, trump changed his position.  Announced it on OReilly tonight.

Trump will let the 11 million illegals stay.  If they commit a felony, they have to leave.

Trump was being HONEST on july 27, 2015, when he said those who only commit misdemeanors (being here constitutes one) can stay here.


He's not deporting them after all.   Unreal.  But he did tell us.  Over a year ago.   Unfortunately, most people weren't listening.

You are correct.  He's all over the map, which means he has no true plan on this.

Yesterday he said criminals would be ousted - BUT ALSO anyone who overstayed visas, and anyone on welfare.  So if you cross the border illegally, you can stay.  If you're a student learning here and you overstayed, you have to leave.  Horrible reasoning.   Those on work/learning visas are going to be way more productive that people that just walked here with zero paperwork.
