My mum passed away just 6 weeks ago on fathers day at just 57. She was misdiagnosed for months with a form of pneumonia, they eventually found cancer cells in her lung fluid which means its a later cancer. 8 days later an oncologist visited her at home and confirmed she had just days to live, she managed 2 after that! I got to her just the day before she died in a hospice, her last day was the most horrific thing i've witnessed, i couldn't have bared to watch her in that state any longer. I honestly think she held on the last 2 days just to see who she needed to. After seeing that i wouldn't blame anyone for wanting to go out on their own terms, avoiding anything like that, her last day still haunts me every second i'm not occupied.
The lady in the story perhaps went a bit early which is tough on her family but if you want out why should anyone be able to tell you otherwise, robin williams was the same, he checked out before he became a burden and a shell of himself, fair enough i say.

My Mother is 72 and has chronic osteoarthritis as well as a host of other issues.  Getting out of a chair for my Mother is a slow and painful exercise.  Walking to the letterbox is fraught with danger, two sets of small stairs and even more unavoidable pain.  Not everybody makes it to 75 and still has their health intact, and my Mom was one of the most vital, strong and fit women I have ever known.  Since her retirement as a career nurse/midwife at 65 she has deteriorated rapidly.  For those who haven't experienced some of the disabilities that inflict the elderly, you have no idea how difficult life can become, and quickly.

Euthansia is not the legal word for suicide.  They are vastly different concepts, one is a healthy individual with no foreseeable terminal illness ending his life prematurely (usually due to emotional or mental dysfunction) and the other is a reasoned choice made by an unhealthy individual whose quality of life is greatly diminished through incurable disease, incapacity, infirmity or serious illness whose remaining life will most certainly be full of indignity, chronic pain and suffering (often intractable).

Your black and white worldview seems bizarre, believing life's purpose is to be some type of hero and anything other than martyrdom and masochism is to be frowned upon.  Your machismo and righteous moralizing uncover your real deep insecurities and any real world experience.  They also demonstrate a lack of understanding about the mechanics of self preservation and how it works.  In the course of a persons life, they naturally attempt to minimize suffering and maximize health and vitality, nobody chooses to move towards the more painful option (unless they are deeply disturbed).  We know enough now about the human condition to forecast the likely scenario for some conditions, so it is only natural if your forecast is one of let's say an indeterminate length of time spent in intractable pain followed by certain death, then it only makes sense to avoid such a fate.

It still amazes me in this day and age how many people still feel a deep desire/need to control other people, usually because of some screwed up morality that has them believe they know what is best for everyone else.  These miserable souls, and they are the majority, can't stand other people choosing to fuck, take drugs, get an abortion, even taken the ultimate ownership of their lives by taking it.  Their list of sins and rules is long indeed and they make it their life mission to bother the non miserable minority in the hope they can spoil their fun all because they don't know how to have any, FUN that is.

Choosing to suffer for no reason is STUPID, not courageous.  But how often do people confuse those two concepts, stupidity and courageousness.

I have mixed emotions on her particular case. As others have shared, I've had a loved one suffer years of a debilitating disease and months before she passed, had been ready to let go but held on because there was no alternative, and we were pulling for her to hang on. Only the last week did we realize she was far better off letting go than struggling for each breath. In her case, it would be perfectly understandable if she had went the route of euthanasia. But for the 75 yr old woman who was in relatively good health, seems a bit premature and a little demented. If she had no husband or children who cared, sure... go ahead but choosing to die to avoid getting old.. kinda weird.

If I get to the point my quality of life sucks and I'm a burden on my loved ones.. I would end it quickly
