NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Metro Police report the shooter at the Carmike Hickory 8 Cinema is dead.

The Nashville Fire Department confirmed that shots were being fired at the movie theater on Bell Road just before 2 p.m.

Police responded to a shots fired call about 1:15 p.m. Dispatch confirmed three EMS units have been sent to the scene.

Metro police spokesman Don Aaron said the suspect entered the theater armed with a gun and a hatchet. The shooting began in the projection room during a showing of Mad Max: Fury Road.

The gunman encountered a South Precinct officer and opened fire. The officer returned fire.

A Metro SWAT Team later engaged and killed the gunman.

“We believe the imminent threat has ended,” Aaron said.

Police said they believe one person may have been injured by a hatchet, but that is still being investigated by the Nashville Fire Department.

Aaron said the gunman had two backpacks on him at the time of the shooting. Crews are working to make sure there is no danger with those backpacks.

Officials at Vanderbilt University Medical Center said they are not expecting any gunshot victims, but they don’t always know ahead of time.

Witnesses at a nearby business reported one person covered with blood.

The Ford Ice Center has been placed on lock down. The Global Mall, which is next to the theater, has also been placed on lock down.

Ezell-Harding, a school located on Bell Road, is also on lock down.

Last month a shooter opened fire a movie theater in Lafayette, LA.

The shooter killed two and injured eight before killing himself on July 23. Police said the 58-year-old gunman was armed with a handgun and acted alone.

In 2012, another man opened fire on a movie theater in Aurora, CO, killing 12 and injuring 70 more, in one of the largest mass shootings in U.S. history. The gunman, James Holmes, has been found guilty in the attack and is going through a sentencing trial to determine if he’ll receive the death penalty.

It just further proves that hatchets need to be outlawed.

Since no innocent people have died, there will be no refunds for the missed movies.

Fuck this. How much more can we take?

Any half-way intelligent, non-moron has to get on board already. What's it going to take before we get our heads out of our asses and ban movie theatres?

Hatchet? I haven't seen Mad Max, but it sounds like a character in the movie somehow obtained Houdini's golden ticket which gives you the ability to walk straight out of the movie screen into the real world. Haven't seen a case like this since '93 during the Last Action Hero.

I was at universal studios today and went to the Terminator show. Sitting in what appears to be a cinema when 5 robot terminator things pop up at either side of the audience and start firing machine guns.
Wonder how long it will be before they change the show as it now appears to be a cinema shooting murder experience simulation and is no longer funny. :(

In fact I damn near shat myself and people were screaming and trying to get out until they realised it was part of the show.
Sick world we now live in and it spoiled the T2 experience for us all.

Sounding like maybe suicide by cop. It's funny that he didn't go to the gun till the cops showed up, granted he could've lost his nerve right at the start, but just curious that no one got shot right at the start.

If he was trying to kill lots of people why pick Mad Max which came out two months ago and probably had like three people in the entire theater. #Massshooterfail

Why do US police talk this way at the current time?

More militarization of the policing, especially in smaller towns. They all try to make police work sound far more high speed and tactical than it really is. "Suspect was shot while....." and "We believe there were no accomplices" is far to Barney Fifeish....

By the way, suspect was a mental health case, that strayed from his family. Gun was a airsoft type bb pistol.
