Tim, here's a fact. As much you'd like to think that gay, blacks and the transgendered are being discriminated against, they're not any more discriminated against than anyone else. I don't care (as most) if you're gay or transgendered. That being said why does the gay community feel it's their duty to push it on EVERYONE? I've told you this before. I have gay friends that can't even figure this out. For the record, unlike some on here I've never called you a name or disrespected your position.
The Coach making some sense in this thread.

it's actually pretty retarded to label a toy as for girls or for boys only. Goddam customers should know what theirs kids want for toys. Shouldn't they?  :-\ On the same level of retardation, there is the for men/women labeling of clothes. How retard is that?

You really don't get it, do you?  I agree completely with the study from the 70s, and with people comments here about their kids and grandkids.  Most boys will gravitate towards boy toys, and most girls will gravitate towards girl toys.  But most is not all.

Do you want a child to feel shamed by a department store sign telling them the toys they like are not for their gender?

Yes.

men and women are not and will never be the same.

Yes.

Well, there are demonstrable differences between men and women in the way we process language, emotions, cognitions, etc. And, of course, this may have some influence on toy selection.

But, really, most young children play with boy boy and girls toys. As I stated previously, most young boys play "house" with young girls. Its not uncommon at all.

I, for one, see no point in reorganizing Target because a few people complained.

Discrimination in America is non-existent?

Or it still happens for some groups (women?) but no longer for blacks or homosexuals?

What year/decade did these 2 groups stop being discriminated against?

But its not the departments stores "job" to dictate if a child should or should not feel uncomfortable. Department stores are there for one reason: to sell merchandise.

Its the parents job to explain to their children why its okay to play with toys that a girl may also play with or vice versa. The parents can easily sit down with the child and explain why there are signs indicating boys and girls toys, and that its okay if a boy wants a toy from the girls section or vice versa.

Just my 2 cents.

Boom....that's the answer right there.

To play Devils Advocate, but I can easily say that people with visual, intellectual, or sensory problems/disabilities may find it difficult to discriminate amongst boy-girls toys if they are sort of lumped in the same category. For example, we know people with autism prefer things to be organized very specifically. When they are not, it causes them severe distress. Having boy and girl toys mixed together may interfere with the typical patterns that people with autism associate with certain genders. Or if there are no signs, people with sensory problems (visual) may find it more difficult finding certain toys, if there is not a sign that says "boy toys." If all the toys are lumped together, they may find it difficult to discriminate between a boy and girl toy. For MANY people, having things specifically categorized makes life easier, especially those with some sort of intellectual or sensory deficit. I can definitely see how mixing boy and girl toys together can make it difficult for someone who is intellectually challenged.

So, its totally okay for Target to do this, without due regard for how it may affect other people? Hmmmm. Seems like these people who are bitching and moaning have no heart for how it may affect other people. But, thats okay, because they got their way.

You were probably buying the dolls anyway

Probably not. At that age I didn't have money to buy anything. I'm old, remember? When little kids wanted something back then, their parents bought it for them, if they chose to. I have a scar on the bottom of my chin from an early mishap with a metal Tonka truck. Guess that is what I played with. The dolls came later.  ;D

Humanity, society, culture, history, tradition, family, statistics, etc. You truly have no understanding of "normal"?

I guess now I have an understanding of what you think is normal.

Yes, it is. Just because their job is to sell merchandise doesn't mean that everyone is mandated to buy it. So, part of their job in selling the merchandise is making sure their customer base is feels comfortable with how it is sold to them. Why do you think these corporations spend billions on marketing? It's no different than a restaurant chain tauting its food as responsibly raised.

Organizing toys by gender is slightly less arbitrary than randomly placing them around the store, so it likely wouldn't be of help to anyone with sensory or developmental disabilities.
