Guy's juice-jacked to all hell, but his "training" is nothing that deviates from what a majority of exercisers do at any local health centre, anywhere in the world.

Athletes train. What we see here is not training. Phil goes to the gym and does workouts.

I tried, but could not make it past 4ish min. Just watching him train puts me in sleep mode. Not inspiring at all.

Training smart > Training hard :)

Make fun of Phil for using the hammer strength, but I bet the guy won't be a worn out train wreck and invalid in his Mid 40s, but rather travelling the world and enjoying his wealth and financial independence 8)

Loathe Philly as a Olympian, but I remember a video w/ Jay and himself talking about not lifting heavy once they reached "muscle maturity" so that they could have longevity and health later on in life.

That being said... It looks like he doesn't even enjoy training, like it is a chore for him, and that's the shit I hate the most about him. All about the haters, not about making himself better.

Do you enjoy your work? Do you come to work with an ear to ear smile everyday? (in case you even have a job)

Actually, yes. But I don't expect you to believe me. No big thing.

And with pro bodybuilding, let's be real, these dudes never come at it in the same way the average person approaches a real career. It's a hobby that occasionally morphs into something that might yield some income for a dozen years. Maybe.

Like Philbert sat with his career counsellor in high school and asked, Now, what college is best for my hopes to become a professional bodybuilder? What kind of classes and grades should I be targeting here to position myself best for acceptance into an appropriate program, so that I might obtain my dream job?

More like ... Oops! Basketball ain't gonna happen. Neither is a traditional job. So ... Well, I train with weights, and I seem to come by a better-than-most physique without much effort ... Let's keep at it and see if I can coast on this for as long as possible. Maybe it can even feed my overly-large ego.

Give me a break.

While I generally believe affeman is wrong with almost 100% of his BB posts, I can't disagree with him here.  None of the things mentioned above matter at all.  Only the end result, and the end result is he's been the best in the entire world at what he does for the last 4 years.

Pro bodybuilding is retarded, partially because of the reasons you posted, but he's #1 right now, and it looks like it's going to continue.

Almost all his vids are like that. Going back to his first DVD. The only one where he was past paced was when he did the bench press challenge.

The end result? The end result of pro bodybuilding is health problems.

For once, I 100% agree with your post.

This is bodybuilding folks, not power lifting. Notice how Arnold hasn't had any major cervical & lumbar decompression + fusions. You want to continue to look and be relatively healthy into your late years.

Phil has figured out what works best for him. He might not groan or have catchy phrases that he barks out in between sets while making funny faces and shaking his head violently, but he is winning the Mr. Olympia every year.

Good for him.

True, true.
And you are not referring to the violent head shaking that makes you wonder if Ronnie is trying to keep himself awake or mimic a dog shaking the water off itself?

Yes. That's exactly what I am referring to.

Ronnie does a masterful variation of this every now and then:

Listen, most pros in the 70's trained with passion and heavy and hard, and a lot of them did NOT wind up like Ronnie Coleman.

Hell, Dorian trained SUPER heavy and hard, and he is not riddled with injuries later on in life.

Sure, all that matters is the end results, and Phil winning the Mr. O. But that doesn't mean we can say he has no passion and trains like utter shit, because he does.

I think there is a balance between training dumb (like Branch) and train hard and heavy and with passion(like Arnold did and many others).

Phil will always be remembered for his Olympia wins. He will also be remembered for being the most whiniest, cry baby, uninspiring, lazy Mr. O ever. That is part of the "legacy" he will leave behind. His choice :D :D

Ronnie trained too heavy for his skeletal structure IMO. Any kind of free squat is going to give you spinal issues past a certain point.

I personally hate squats due to my long legs and short torso and have only ever humoured them on a smith machine. There is nothing wrong with training on high-end machines for certain movements.

Phil may not be the most entertaining bodybuilder, but he is being clever. He's not going to put much muscle on whilst he's cutting, regardless of what he claims, the majority of his mass is already there, he's simply cruising into the O training moderately hard and letting the drugs do the work...
