Not sure if its a nationwide issue, out here in Massachusetts, the re-loadable (food cards) are brutal.
You can let them build up to as high as you like. (If you dont spend it all the month before).
People (not working) buying booze, lobster, Cigs, etc.

let me also teach you a little something about economics as well. that SS, Medicare, Income security that make up 2/3 of the national debit is what called entitlement spending which means it can not be touch or lowered. The rest is DOD, ed and everything else is what law makers can cut spending on. So you see if you are upset that education isn't getting enough money that's because of the growing SS debit and out of control medicare

problem with this chart is that it is not in constant dollars.  That is it doesn't take into effect inflation

It is but it isn't  its technically taken for a separate fund that's not effected by congressional spending approval. Im not sure how it works all I know is that when the government shut down and I didn't get paid all the retires still got theirs
