Dumbbell Rows
« on: August 13, 2015, 05:22:36 AM »
A great exercise which is so often performed wrongly due to ego lifting. this video i agree with and also with the two arm version you see loose form just simply because the Bells are way to Heavy. The whole point of Dumbbells at least to me.. is a greater range of motion and flexibility in your hand position.

I had a strength coach tell me that getting the elbow level with the back is as far as you want to go for shoulder injury reasons.

That said, I may go back to the DB Row my next back workout. It's low-back friendly.

Also, those DBs that he had were the same ones I have: the IronMind adjustables. Best adjustable bells in the world. 5-120 each. His was 55 lb. in the vid.

(edit: it's IronMaster DBs)

I sometimes do the variation lying on a slightly inclined bench. like to pull further back than with a Barbell, there is a bar where you can come back further just canīt remember what itīs called.. used or was used for benches, The Cambered Bench Bar ?

Yeah, the cambered bar.

I like to do chest-supported rows. The set-up is a little wonky in my home gym, but the stretch and targeting is first-rate:

Great Home Gym -aj- ... yes nice exercise. I have to admit i really only use DBs on these. Check out Girondas version in a video with Kay Baxter... hard to really master but effective.

Love doing them with dumbbells one side at a time, but I can't do it bent over w/ barbell it kills my back.

when i do them with Dumbbells i rest my forehead on an inclined bench, like i do for bent over laterals. Depends how i feel or lying as i wrote on a bench. Barbell rows are the king off mass for back and i love them but now and again DB rows are nice. Pulling to the waist hits lower lats better than Barbell rows which is better for upper back...yes yates rows supinated grip works too ;D

When I do bb rows, I usually do Yates style. I like the supinated "hook" grip for isolation (oh brother)

Yates knew his stuff... it works but his body position is too high for me. I like just above parallel.

My lower back won't let me get too low, so I hinge the weight back towards my hips.

i think everyone just has to find their sweet spot with BB rows or two arm DB rows. Good as long as your lats get it and not too much over the hips and Hammies.

Sparing my LB is one of the reasons that I like single-arm rows and chest-supported rows.

Just be careful of the spine rotation on single arms, I have low back disc issues and my physio told me to avoid them

Good point. Another reason to limit the ROM at the top.

OK some do a twist at the top of the movement for greater contraction but keeping your back stable and pulling back and contracting lats is different. Just what i find.
